Today (15/06/2015) and while at the Annecy Animation Festival in France, it was announced that Cartoon Network has launched a brand-new initiative – Cartoon Network Imagination Studios – a specially-created online destination to inspire and celebrate the imagination and creativity of kids.
Launching across EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) within the next few months, Cartoon Network Imagination Studios will give children a sneak-peek behind the scenes of the studios of Cartoon Network, providing a unique insight into the making of cartoons and to allowing kids to have their imaginations run wild.
The channel’s own artists and creators, such as Ben Bocquelet (The Amazing World of Gumball), Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe) and many others will accompany kids on their journey through the site, with advice and help on how to create their own characters, animate and tell stories. Kids will be able to do several activities on the new website – including drawing, colouring, storyboarding, music, special effects, voiceover, movement and animation – giving them the facilities to begin working on their very own creations.
Some countries across the EMEA region will also offer children aged 6 – 12 the chance to enter their original creations – in the form of new character drawings, storyboards or animations to Cartoon Network Imagination Studios Awards. The winners will have the chance of seeing their creations brought to life on Cartoon Network. The new initiative is similar to the Animation Generation competition Cartoon Network hosts in South Africa.
Patricia Hidalgo, SVP & Chief Content and Creative Officer, Kids, Turner Broadcasting System EMEA made this statement about the launch of the new initiative:
“We often receive fan art and story ideas inspired by our shows, so we wanted to create a destination to encourage and facilitate all the amazing creativity stored in the minds of our young audiences. Cartoon Network Imagination Studios is a place where kids can learn, gain inspiration, have fun and, ultimately, be themselves; it promotes the value of being different and, in turn, creating something unique. That’s the essence of the Cartoon Network brand and the very reason we’re here at Annecy seeking out those with the most original ideas and creations.”
In the UK, Cartoon Network Imagination Studios will launch in early July, with Cartoon Network Imagination Studios Awards opening for entries from 1st September. The UK competition will feature a specially made teacher toolkit, allowing primary schools to get involved as part of their lessons, in line with the UK national curriculum and centered on the theme of friendship. In addition, the UK campaign will be supported by the British Film Institute (BFI), which will play host to a special Funday event on 28th October and will take part in judging the competition entries.
Justin Johnson, BFI young audience programmer and jury member for Cartoon Network Imagination Studios Awards made this statement about Cartoon Network Imagination Studios:
“Cartoon Network Imagination Studios is a great new initiative for inspiring kids to get creative and we’re looking forward to 28th October when we will be supporting the campaign by hosting a Cartoon Network Funday here at the BFI Southbank. I’ll also have the enviable job of being part of the jury process for the awards later in the year. Animation is a hugely important part of the UK film sector and we applaud Cartoon Network for helping young and aspiring animators.”
The new initiative follows the successful roll-out of the CN Buddy Network campaign (“Be a Buddy, Not a Bully”) in the UK and across EMEA in November 2014.
