Cartoon Network New York Comic Con 2016 Overview

New York Comic Con 2016 was full of different Cartoon Network events, such as panels, signings and a costume competition, so here’s a summary of the events that happened on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th October.

Regular Show Panel

The first Cartoon Network panel was for Regular Show, this panel was a significant one as it will be the last ever panel for the show at a convention. JG Quintel (the show’s creator and voice of Mordecai) was joined with William Salyers (voice of Rigby), Roger Craig Smith (voice of Thomas/Nikolai and additional voices) and Janie Haddad (voice of Margaret).

During the session there was a live script reading and an Q&A segment. The panel was asked questions from the audience – like what items they would take into space (relating to the Regular Show: In Space story arc) and what was their favourite episode.

Steven Universe Panel

At the Steven Universe panel, the show’s creator – Rebecca Sugar was joined with Jennifer Paz (Voice of Lapis Lazuli), Shelby Rabara (Voice of Peridot), Tom Scharpling (voice of Greg), AJ Michalka (Stevonnie) and Charlyne Yi (Voice of Ruby). There was a Q&A session and also a exclusive performance of a song in an upcoming episode. Many fans were dressed up as their favourite characters from the show. Rebecca Sugar also did a book signing for her book based on an episode of the show – “The Answer”, this was an opportunity to meet and greet the show’s creator and to get a copy of the book signed.

The Powerpuff Girls Panel and Costume Ball

The last panel at New York Comic Con 2016 was for The Powerpuff Girls, Amanda Leighton (voice of Blossom), Kristen Li (voice of Bubbles), Natalie Palamides (voice of Buttercup) were joined with Haley Mancini (show writer and voice of Princess Morbucks).

The other event at New York Comic Con 2016 was a costume ball and prizes were given away for people with the best cartoon character costumes, the contest was judged by Kyle A. Carrozza (Creator of Mighty Magiswords), Jeremy Shada (Voice of Finn, Adventure Time), Charlyne Yi (Voice of Ruby, Steven Universe and Voice of Chloe, We Bare Bears) and Rebecca Sugar (Creator of Steven Universe). The winner was someone dressed as Yellow Diamond – a main villain in Steven Universe.

Cartoon Network will be returning to New York Comic Con this year and will be hosting a series of events on Friday 7th October and Saturday 8th October, this year there will be a cartoon character costume ball, a Steven Universe panel, a Powerpuff Girls panel and a final goodbye to Regular Show. The Regular Show panel will feature J.G. Quintel and William Salyers (the voice of Rigby), there will be a sneak peek of Regular Show: In Space as well as never seen before footage from inside the studio. Rebecca Sugar will be attending the Steven Universe panel and also to discuss her new book based on the series called “The Answer”, there will also be never seen before behind the scenes footage of Steven Universe at the panel.

Amanda Leighton (Voice of Blossom), Kristen Li (Voice of Bubbles), Natalie Palamides (Voice of Buttercup) and Haley Mancini (series writer and the voice of Princess Morbucks) will be attending The Powerpuff Girls panel, which will include a live performance, sneak peeks of upcoming episodes and an inside look on how the show is made.

There will also be a costume ball contest with some special guests as judges including Kyle A. Carrozza (Creator of Mighty Magiswords), Jeremy Shada (Voice of Finn from Adventure Time), Charlyne Yi (Voice of Ruby from Steven Universe and Voice of Chloe from We Bare Bears) and Rebecca Sugar (Creator of Steven Universe).

Mordecai, Rigby and fellow park employees will take you on an odyssey through never-before-seen footage from inside the studio, along with a sneak peek of the new season of Regular Show…IN SPACE! Part of the back-to-back panel extravaganza preceded by Regular Show at 10.30am.

Ahead of the San Diego Comic-Con International convention this week, Cartoon Network announced today (19/07/2016) that they have renewed the rebooted The Powerpuff Girls series for a second season. The series is about three young superheroines called Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup and their duty is protect Townsville from a myriad of monsters and various villains. The new Powerpuff Girls series which premiered in April this year was the largest international event in Cartoon Network’s twenty-four-year history with 81 million fans worldwide engaged in the new show on various platforms, the “Powerpuff Yourself” avatar maker website was used by total of twelve million fans from around the world. Last week, the show was nominated for a Creative Arts Emmy in the “Outstanding Short Form Animated Program” category.

This week, the 2016 series of The Powerpuff Girls will make its inaugural appearance at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday 21st July, the Cartoon Network section of the convention will feature a booth where fans can create their own Powerpuff avatar by using the “Powerpuff Yourself” avatar maker and print it on a T-shirt or tote bag.

Several licencing deals for Powerpuff Girls were made to mark the return of the popular late 1990’s/early 2000’s animated show, including deals with fashion house Moschino, retailers Hot Topic and C&A, McDonald’s Happy Meal toys, an international toy contract with Spin Master and the use of Powerpuff Girls graphical assets for MIT Media Lab’s child-friendly Scratch computer programming and Google’s Made With Code GIF educational programmes.

Cartoon Network has announced the renewal of the global phenomenon, The Powerpuff Girls. The series premiere in April won the night in all key demos and had over 81 million worldwide fans experiencing it across multiple platforms, making it the largest international event in the history of the network. The wildly successful Powerpuff Yourself avatar maker has also given over 12 million fans of all ages the ability to see themselves as a real Townsville superhero. The series also picked up its first Emmy nomination this year for “Outstanding Short Form Animated Program.”

Convention goers can step into the booth where they can print their personalized avatar on a t-shirt or tote bag using the Powerpuff Girls avatar maker.

The Powerpuff Girls has touched the cultural zeitgeist with Moschino and Hot Topic fashion collaborations in the United States and C&A Department Store and BIZUU globally; an international toy partnership with Spin Master featuring a full range of products; and as a McDonald’s® Happy Meal® promotion with six different toy offerings.
