Cartoon Network Imagination Studios MENA Research Study
Turner Middle East and North Africa has recently conducted an Imagination Studios survey in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to find out more about children’s creative preferences and what kind of character traits they want their cartoon character creations to have. According to the research, kids in the two countries prefer writing to drawing and they think that personality is more important than the appearance of their characters. There was a need for a creative platform to encourage creativity in the region, this led to the creation of Imagination Studios in the MENA area. The research was conducted on a sample size of 1500 people, this includes children between 6 to 12 years old, their parents, as well as their teachers.
23% of children in the UAE and 25% in Saudi Arabia voted that their character should be kind.
25% of respondents in the UAE agreed that their imaginary heroes should be inventive, while 22% in Saudi Arabia stated this was important.
70% of people surveyed acknowledged that humour is a trait that they would like their characters to embody, a quality they also seek in their friends.
43% of respondents preferred that their characters speak classical Arabic.
Cartoon Network Imagination Studios is a new initiative in the MENA region which had a successful rollout over Europe and Africa last year, the Imagination Studios website informs children on how Cartoon Network’s cartoons are made and teaches them in a simplified way about the various stages in animation production, ranging from storyboarding to character design. As part of the Imagination Studios initiative, there is also a competition for children to enter their storyboards, character drawings and short animations, the theme for this year is about road safety.
The Cartoon Network Arabic Imagination Studios competition is open to three categories based on age groups: 4 to 6 years old, 7 to 9 years old and 10 to 14 years old. Ten winners from each age group will be awarded Kindle 8GB Fire HD 7 Wi-Fi Tablet. The competition ends on Wednesday 30th November. To encourage participation in the Imagination Studios competition, representatives from Cartoon Network Arabic will visit schools across Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and Kuwait. Back in 2012, Cartoon Network Arabic launched a similar competition called Creative Generation, Cartoon Network Africa also had a competition of the same name before Imagination Studios was introduced.
Tarek Mounir, Vice President and General Manager of Turner for Turkey, Middle East, North Africa, Greece & Cyprus said:
“Since its introduction, the Creative Generation initiative has received tremendous response from kids, parents and schools in the region. Our recent endeavour, Imagination Studios, is an evolution of that creative concept, and is aimed at attracting a more diversified pool of young creative minds. Imagination Studios will encourage creative thinking in bright young minds, and offer a platform to showcase the talent of students across the region”
