Cartoon Network At PAX West Overview OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes And Steven Universe: Save The Light

Friday this week (01/09/2017) was the first day of the PAX (Penny Arcade Expo) West Video Game Convention in Seattle, Washington, USA. The first event was a panel about two upcoming releases from Cartoon Network Games – Steven Universe: Save the Light and OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes.

OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes creator – Ian Jones-Quartey was at the panel to discuss the design and development process behind the new video game, he was joined with Nathan Vella, Co-founder & president of Capybara Games – the developers of OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes, Chris Graham, the creative director and founder of Grumpyface Studios, the game developer for Steven Universe: Save The Light and finally, Mario Piedra, the creative director of Cartoon Network Games. During the panel’s live stream, in-game footage and artwork from both games were shown. The development of the both games took a different approach to the way licensed games are usually produced, where the creators of the licensed property is directly involved in the game’s production and creative process. There’s also demos for OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes and Steven Universe: Save The Light for people to play at the convention.

Summary Of The Cartoon Network Panel At PAX West 2017

In February 2016, Cartoon Network hosted a game jam in Portland, Oregon. A game jam is an event where a large gathering of game developers produce video games within a short space of time, 200 independent game developers produced games based on Cartoon Network Studios’ Lakewood Plaza Turbo; the animated short that became OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes. Ian mentioned this at the start of the panel to explain how the idea for a new game came to fruition. At the panel, Ian explains he has an open approach to the development of OK K.O.!’s universe, anyone who contributes ideas to OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, whether its in a game or in an episode, takes part in the franchise’s world building. Capybara Games’ very own artists had experience working in the animation industry, and used their expertise on the new OK K.O.! game, in addition, the show itself was inspired by video games, which means the concept was easily converted into an actual video game. The brand new OK K.O.! game is a RPG adventure/brawler game with each quest in the game equating to a mini episode of OK K.O!. OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes will be released for XBOX One, PS4 and Steam for the PC.

Steven Universe: Save The Light is developed by Grumpyface Studios, the game studio has already developed mobile games based on Cartoon Network’s properties including The Amazing World of Gumball, Regular Show and The Powerpuff Girls, and they’re fans of Steven Universe too. Chris Graham from Grumpyface, explains that fusions will be a feature in the new Steven Universe game, which is an important character building and plot-driving feature of the TV show, fusions will include Sardonyx (a fusion of Pearl and Garnet), Stevonnie (Steven and Connie) and many more. In the game, Peridot can be used to make turrets, landmines and debuffers. The game introduces a new Peridot-like enemy named Squaridot, the character behaves in a similar way to Peridot used to before she joined the Crystal Gems. The new game also features the original voice acting talent from the show. The gameplay was partly inspired by Nintendo’s Paper Mario and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker games. Steven Universe: Save The Light will be released for XBOX One and PS4 consoles.
