Kwesé TV Mostly Closes Down In Africa, Future Of Toonami Africa Is Uncertain

On Thursday 1st November, Kwesé TV owners – Econet Media vastly reduced their DTH (direct-to-home) pay-tv service’s channel offering, by removing most third-party channels and reducing it to a package of mostly FTA (free-to-air), religious and news channels for a minimal fee (possibly as an annual cost), leaving Kwesé Free Sports and Kwesé Free Sports Africa as the only Kwesé branded channels remaining on the service. Instead, Kwesé is focusing on their digital services – Kwesé Play and Kwesé iflix. Kwesé TV will refund customers’ subscription fees for November.

As a consequence of the changes, Toonami Africa, a sister channel of Cartoon Network Africa dedicated to animated superhero shows has been removed from the platform, this has put the channel’s future in doubt, as the channel was only exclusive to Kwesé TV. Cartoon Network Africa, Boomerang Africa and CNN International have also been removed from the platform. Weirdly, Toonami Africa’s Facebook page is still active and are promoting new episodes of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu starting tomorrow Monday (5th November) at 4.25pm CAT. Turner Africa has yet to make a statement about the future of the channel. Toonami Africa launched on 1st June 2017.

On the plus-side, Toonami France’s future seems to be a lot more certain, as there was a presentation promoting the channel and one of its shows – Dragon Ball Super at Kidexpo Paris 2018 this week.
