Adafruit’s New Steven Universe MakeCode Electronics Project Guide

Online electronics education/electronic components supplier – Adafruit has added a new Steven Universe themed electronics project guide onto their website. Cartoon Network announced their partnership with Adafruit and Microsoft last month which build upon Cartoon Network’s ongoing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) initiative. The projects help to inspire kids to get creative and also to learn the principles of computer coding by constructing items inspired by Cartoon Network’s shows using paper or card and small electronic components, including Adafruit’s Circuit Playground Express micro-controller device and also with the use of Microsoft’s MakeCode coding development tool.

The new Steven Universe themed projects include a light-up Rose Quartz shield that makes a sound when hit, Garnet’s gauntlets that creates light and sound effects when punching, fusion gems with use of LED lights (for example Ruby and Sapphire transforming into Garnet) and also Pearl’s spear which features motion detection and lighting effects. More Steven Universe projects will be added in the near future.

Cartoon Network USA Teams Up With Adafruit And Microsoft’s MakeCode For Educational Cartoon Character Themed Electronic Projects

Cartoon Network USA has teamed up with Microsoft’s computer coding programming environment – MakeCode and online electronics education/electronic components supplier – Adafruit for a series of Cartoon Network themed projects to help inspire young people to code and to create and construct their own electronic projects using paper or card and small electronic components. The partnership with Microsoft and Adafruit is Cartoon Network’s latest development for its ongoing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) initiative.

Projects include an electronic version of Ice King’s and Princess Bubblegum’s crown from Adventure Time, which have light and sound effects. Kids can also create their own version of Darwin from The Amazing World of Gumball which lights up and makes sounds when you shake him. There’s a glow-in-the-dark sign activity, a Finn cup lamp activity, a Jake “Hot Potato/Dog” game, a BMO music box activity that plays different sounds at a different tempo when moved and an activity based on the Enchiridion book from Adventure Time where players have to collect all the gems.

All project instructions require Adafruit Circuit Playground Express micro-controller device, Microsoft’s MakeCode coding development tool (either in the web browser or the Windows 10 app) and also some imagination and inspiration too.

Jill King, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Partnerships at Cartoon Network USA also commented on the technology learning partnership with Adafruit and Microsoft, she said:

“This generation of kids is the most diverse, mobile generation ever. They immerse themselves in content, not just as consumers, but as creators, We see this partnership as bringing best-in-class offerings together to inspire kids. With software from Microsoft, hardware from Adafruit, and characters that kids love from Cartoon Network, we hope to fuel their creative confidence, self-expression, and curiosity.”
