Cartoon Network Asia-Pacific Greenlights Monster Beach TV Series

Today (12/10/2017), Turner Asia-Pacific has greenlit an animated series based on the movie – Monster Beach which was originally commissioned for Halloween 2014 for Cartoon Network feeds in the Asia-Pacific region. The animated series will air on Turner’s international kids channels including Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Pogo and Boing across EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), Latin America and its home region – Asia-Pacific in 2019. Initially, a total of 52 episodes of a runtime of 11 minutes will be produced, the new show is currently in the pre-production stage, a pilot for a proposed TV series was greenlit in late 2015.

Monster Beach tells the story of an unusual tropical island inhabited by mostly friendly surfing monsters living alongside humans. Monster Beach is created by Patrick Crawley, Bruce Kane and Maurice Argiro at Australian studio – Bogan Entertainment Solutions Animation. The animated series will follow the adventures of Jan and Dean and their efforts to defeat the evil monster – Dr. Knutt and his Tiki henchmen.

The Monster Beach TV movie also won an ASTRA award in Australia for Best Children’s Programme in 2015 and also a Screen Music award for Best Music for Children’s TV. The new series follows another locally commissioned animated series from both Bogan and Turner Asia-Pacific – Exchange Student Zero which premiered in 2015 and like Monster Beach, it also originated as an animated TV movie. Both productions are an Asia-Pacific joint effort, with animation produced by Philippines-based studio – Top Draw Animation.

This is evidence of Turner International’s continuing commitment to animated programming produced outside the United States, this includes the short series – The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe which will premiere across EMEA next month, the highly successful The Amazing World of Gumball, Boomerang short series – The Happos Family, upcoming Boomerang series – Taffy and Pogo India’s Tik Tak Tail.

Cartoon Network’s Commissioned TV Movie, Monster Beach, Wins Astra Award For Most Outstanding Children’s Programme

Cartoon Network’s first Australian commissioned animated TV movie, Monster Beach, has won an Astra Award in The Most Outstanding Children’s Programme category, the 2015 Astra Awards ceremony was held in Pyrmont, Sydney on 12th March. Monster Beach premiered last Hallowe’en on Cartoon Network Australia and then around the Asia-Pacific region, the animated movie will air in Europe later this year.

The original movie was created by Australian animation studio Bogan Entertainment Solutions (BES) with animation also produced by Top Draw Animation in the Philippines. Monster Beach follows two siblings who visit their uncle on a secluded island for the summer, only to find the island in danger and the locals are surf-crazed monsters.

Turner International Asia Pacific chief content officer for kids content, Mark Eyers, made this statement regarding the success of Monster Beach:

“The success of Monster Beach is a result of a collaboration between Cartoon Network’s executive production team in Hong Kong and BES in Melbourne. It is a great example of how an international network can partner with Australia’s top talent to create locally-produced content that can reach audiences across the world”

The director of Monster Beach, Patrick Crawley, made this statement in regards of the development and success of the movie:

“Taking a project from the kitchen table through to international release has been an amazing experience. As has partnering with those whose belief in the concepts and the potential of Australian animation has been unswerving in its support. Working with Cartoon Network has meant we’ve had the opportunity to link some of the best Australian writing, design and animation talent with their contemporaries from around the world to deliver an outstanding project”

Adventure Time also received a 2015 Astra Awards nomination for Most Outstanding Children’s Program, but it lost to Monster Beach.

Cartoon Network Has Two Nominees For The Most Outstanding Children’s Content Astra Award For Adventure Time And Monster Beach

Both Adventure Time and Monster Beach are nominees for an Astra Award (Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association) in Australia, the nominees were announced today (10/02/2014), Cartoon Network has two out of the four nominations dominating the Most Outstanding Children’s Program category, with rivals Nickelodeon and Disney with one nomination each. The awards ceremony will happen on Thursday 12th March. This year’s Astra awards will be the 20th year anniversary and the largest one yet, it will be hosted at The Star in Pyrmont, Sydney, New South Wales.
