Olympic Diver Tom Daley Teams Up With Cartoon Network UK For Buddy Network Anti-Bullying Initiative

British Olympic diver, Tom Daley has partnered with Cartoon Network UK and ChildLine to launch this year’s anti-bullying campaign, CN Buddy Network which started today (16/11/2015) coinciding with national anti-bullying week in the United Kingdom. The initiative, which encourages kids and young people to “Be a buddy, not a bully,” aims to raise awareness and empower them to take action against bullying. Cartoon Network UK first launched the initiative at the start of national anti-bullying week last year, which was fronted by British rapper, Tinie Tempah. Cartoon Network’s anti-bullying campaign also had successful launches in the United States, Latin America and in various countries around Europe.

Cartoon Network UK is working alongside ChildLine, the main helpline for children and young people in the UK to provide immediate advice and support for those in need. Bullying is still the top concern amongst children that are 11 years or younger. One in four children in the 11 and under age group contacted ChildLine about bullying in the last year, a two per cent rise year on year.

British Olympic diver, Tom Daley has teamed up with Cartoon Network to launch the next phase of the international anti-bullying campaign, CN Buddy Network which kicks off today to tie in with national anti-bullying week. The initiative, which encourages kids and young people to “Be a buddy, not a bully,” aims to raise awareness and empower them to take action against bullying.

Cartoon Network is collaborating with ChildLine, the leading UK helpline for children and young people to provide immediate advice and support for those in need. Bullying remains the top concern amongst children aged 11 and under, with one in four in the age group contacting ChildLine about bullying in the last year, a two per cent increase year on year.

Almost 26,000 children contacted ChildLine about bullying or cyber bullying in the last year alone. The charity’s Facebook video offering advice and tips for those affected by bullying saw a whopping 43% increase in views since 2013. There has also been a large increase in message board threads about bullying and discrimination with regular comments from under 11’s saying they “hate going to school” or that they “feel trapped”. In 2014-15 there were 12,160 message board threads about bullying and discrimination, an increase of 78% on last year. (All stats from ChildLine in the period 2014/15)

Tom Daley appears in an on-air campaign on Cartoon Network premiering today (16th November) which also includes an original series of animated shorts addressing the viewpoints of the bully, the bullied and the observer. “I jumped at the chance to work with Cartoon Network and ChildLine on this as I know only too well what it feels like to be bullied. I had things thrown at me at school and was rugby tackled on the school field for no reason and it made me feel terrible. It made me question whether I wanted to be a diver if it meant suffering in this way as a consequence. It was such a relief when I finally told someone. My advice; if you’re being bullied, or you know someone that is, please remember that it’s not your fault and you’re not alone. Bullying is never acceptable and there is nothing shameful about asking for help – speaking up is the first step in making things better.”

ChildLine ambassador and volunteer, Anna Williamson says:

“Bullying is still one of the most common issues that children call ChildLine about but the difference is that nowadays it can follow children wherever they are. It’s not just in the playgrounds or on the way to and from school. It’s in their pockets – it follows them on their phones, on social networks as well as face to face and the 24 hour nature of it can be relentless. For some children it seems like there’s no escape which can cause anxiety and distress. It is so important that we, as adults, take time to listen to our children and help support them through bullying issues. It is also important to keep up with online issues so we can help children navigate safely settings and block unwanted contact. And if children feel they can’t talk to anyone, they can always contact ChildLine, 24/7 for confidential advice and support.”

BAFTA Childrens Awards 2015: Cartoon Network UK Nominations

Today (22/10/2015), BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) have revealed their nominations for the 2015 BAFTA Kids Awards. This year, Cartoon Network UK have achieved seven nominations (excluding show acquisitions) also including the children’s channel of the year category, of which Cartoon Network UK also won at the 2014 Kids BAFTA’s. Great Marlborough Productions’ (the London based studio owned by Cartoon Network) very own The Amazing World of Gumball has been nominated in the best animated show category. Also nominated in the animated show category is a Boomerang acquisition, Mr Bean: The Animated Series.

Transformers: Robots In Disguise also won an nomination in the children’s interactive (adapted into an interactive experience) category, which is also an acquired show and airs on Cartoon Network UK. Both Adventure Time and Clarence which are Cartoon Network Studios productions have been nominated and are in the best international kids show category. Regular Show has been shortlisted and is a voting option in the Kids Vote: Television category. Another acquired show, Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, that also airs on Cartoon Network UK has been shortlisted in the same category and is up for the public vote.

Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, Made by Turner’s (Cartoon Network) sister companies – Warner Bros. Interactive and Entertainment and Traveller’s Tales, have been shortlisted and is also up for the public vote in the children’s game of the year category. Cartoon Network has yet again been nominated in the children’s channel of the year category and are currently defending champions. Cartoon Network also received a nomination for best short form production for its anti-bullying initiative – Buddy Network, of which musician Dizzee Rascal and Olympic diver Tom Daley have taken part to promote the initiative. Finally, the Adventure Time: Game Wizard has been nominated in the other game of the year category which will be decided by a jury.

The 2015 BAFTA Children’s Awards will take place at the Roundhouse Theatre in London on Sunday 22nd November. British actor, rapper, comedian and screenwriter Ben Smith, also known as Doc Brown will be returning to present the awards. The BAFTA Children’s Awards have been running since 1996 and was created to celebrate the creative success of high quality media and interactive content aimed at British children. A BAFTA award is considered to be one of the most prestigious awards in the UK media industry.

Cartoon Network UK Teams Up With Childline & Tinie Tempah For Buddy Network Anti-Bullying Campaign

In the UK, it’s currently National Anti-Bullying Week (17/11/2014 – 21/11/2014) and from today, Cartoon Network UK teamed up with children support charities Childline and Bullying UK, digital radio station, Fun Kids and rapper Tinie Tempah to launch Cartoon Network’s Buddy Network initiative. Cartoon Network launched their new microsite for the Buddy Network today, which is used to inform and educate children about bullying and to offer support for those who are bullied or they know someone who has been bullied, also people are encouraged to speak out and not to suffer in silence. The whole point of the campaign is to be a buddy and not a bully and Cartoon Network has published a set of rules called the buddy code to encourage friendship. The Buddy Network campaign is very similar to Cartoon Network USA’s and Latin America’s Stop Bullying: Speak Up campaign which has also been recently introduced in Italy.
