Interview Summary

According to show’s creators, the brand new show is an adventure in a fairytale world with a small and cosy feeling, as the show is made in Denmark, the location and feel were heavily inspired by Scandinavian nature, culture and humor. Much like a forest in Scandinavia, the forest in the show is more closed and denser and in the show each part of the forest is inhabited by strange creatures. The creators explain that Europeans have a different point of view due to different influences in their lives, including reading different children’s books and watching different shows and films.

The show features 2D characters set against a backdrop of real-life miniature sets, mostly made from natural materials like twigs and herbs. The main reason why natural materials were used is to get a more natural fairy-tale like effect with lighting, shadow and depth. The show is mostly drawn in Flash, but there’s hand-drawn animation too and even puppets.

Both Christian Bøving-Andersen and Eva Lee Wallberg pitched their idea for “Ivandoe” while working on The Amazing World of Gumball at Cartoon Network’s studio in London and Cartoon Network EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) were interested as they were looking for new short form content, the creators also pitched six other show ideas before Ivandoe, although they weren’t successful pitches, the show creators didn’t think the pitches were a waste of time because it helped to develop their Ivandoe pitch idea.

While making the show, the creators felt they had a lot of creative freedom and Cartoon Network executives only interfered on a few script ideas, but the channel was willing to settle on a compromise. Ivandoe had a production team of fifty people, which were based at Sun Creature Studio in Copenhagen, people were hired based on their enthusiasm for the project and also for their sense of humour and artists provided input on how the show would look like.

From The Turner UK Press Release: Cartoon Network EMEA Announces New Original Series The Heroic Quest Of The Valiant Prince Ivandoe

Turner’s Cartoon Network EMEA has today announced a brand-new comedy series, The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe, which will be launching across the region from late 2017. The details were revealed by Patricia Hidalgo, Chief Content Officer, Turner EMEA Kids & International Kids Strategy, during the opening keynote at Cartoon Business in Belfast.

Created by Danish animators Christian Bøving-Andersen and Eva Lee Wallberg – who previously worked on Cartoon Network’s EMEA-produced hit series The Amazing World of Gumball – the series of 10 x 3 minute episodes follows young prince of the forest, Ivandoe who is tasked by his father, The Mighty Stag, to go on a quest and return with the magical Golden Feather of the fearsome Eagle King. Accompanied by his dedicated squire, a small bird called Bert, Ivandoe embarks on an epically silly adventure, discovering new and mysterious areas of the forest and an array of peculiar creatures along the way.

The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe has been produced in partnership with Copenhagen-based Sun Creature Studio (the pilot episode was created with Copenhagen Bombay), with co-funding from the Danish Public Service Fund. Cartoon Network will be launching it as an online interactive digital play, alongside the linear roll-out, encouraging kids and animation fans to “quest” with Ivandoe and Bert in order to travel across the landscape and unlock new episodes. This marks the first time Cartoon Network EMEA has developed and launched new property in this way.

Patricia Hidalgo commented: “Ivandoe is a really exciting project, with an extremely talented creative team at its helm and welcome support from the Danish Public Service Fund. The story and style presents us with a great opportunity to introduce this new IP in a non-traditional way, with a host of interactive digital elements that will allow kids to get to know the hilarious and loveable characters by questing along with them. We can’t wait to see the response from Cartoon Network fans.”

Christian Bøving-Andersen and Eva Lee Wallberg added: “It’s been so much fun to work with Cartoon Network and the dedicated team at Sun Creature Studio developing what started as a small idea in East London into 10 actual episodes produced here in Copenhagen. We are very happy and proud of the result and we really hope that the kids out there will love questing with Ivandoe just as much as we do.”
