Cartoon Network This Week Episode 24 Best Of San Diego Comic Con 2018 Part One
In this week’s episode of Cartoon Network This Week, Sam is at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 to check out Cartoon Network’s events at the convention. There will be two parts covering news, interviews and highlights at San Diego Comic-Con, in part one, Sam has a chat with the creator of Steven Universe – Rebecca Sugar and the voice of Garnet – Estelle, shares some highlights from the last-ever Adventure Time panel at the convention and meets the cast of Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe gem landscape themed booth with giant Crystal Gem character inflatables and exclusive Cartoon Network merchandise are also shown in this episode, also not forgetting, Rupert shows off his superpower – Tongue Attack.
Throughout the convention, Cartoon Network have given away 4,000 Steven Universe tote bags and 14,000 buttons to fans. At the Cartoon Network booth, Steven Universe fans had the opportunity to have a photo with the Crystal Gems (in front of a green screen with an option to choose a “battle” background or the Made With Love Beach City” background) and use a variety of props, which includes a variety of props from the show, including Garnet’s gauntlets, Amethyst’s whip, Pearl’s spear and Steven’s shield.
After visiting the Cartoon Network booth, Sam then visits the Mondo’s booth to talk about the convention exclusive Adventure Time 7″ vinyl record, Mondo has partnered with Cartoon Network before, hosted two Adventure Time art galleries and released the Over The Garden Wall soundtrack on vinyl. The exclusive Adventure Time vinyl features the tracks “Friends Don’t Fight” (both with vocals and instrumental) and “Manlorette Party” and also featured artwork by JJ Harrison, each record was sold for $12 (plus tax), the vinyl is a limited edition release, so Adventure Time fans had to make sure they’re able to get a copy in time. Sam tries to convince Mondo to release a Rupert The Seal record, but they’re not interested, so Rupert gets his revenge with his superheroic tongue attack!. 😀
Afterwards, Sam walks over to the Horton Grand Theatre for the “Superheroes of Body Positivity: A Conversation With Steven Universe’s Rebecca Sugar and Friends”, while there, he talks to Rebecca Sugar and Estelle. According to Rebecca, the Steven Universe and Dove Self-Esteem project all started off when Dove noticed the different body types and shapes in Steven Universe, as they noticed its something they haven’t really seen in a cartoon before, Rebecca then mentioned that this was deliberate and something she really cared about. When the partnership was formed, Rebecca and the Steven Universe crew had special access to body confidence research and psychologists. Sam then asks Estelle what she thought on why people look up to Garnet, from Estelle’s perspective, Garnet validated their knowledge of self and knowing they can deal with any situation. Sam then mentioned the recently released Steven Universe/Dove Self-Esteem Project video featuring the song “We Deserve To Shine”, Rebecca wrote the song herself, she feels that the song encourages kids to be seen and then inspire each other.
Cartoon Network USA also released a behind-the-scenes video for the “We Deserve To Shine” music video, which can been seen below:

After meet up with Rebecca and Estelle, Sam heads over to the Indigo Ballroom for the very last Adventure Time panel, in this segment, we see John DiMaggio (voice of Jake the Dog) singing the infamous “Bacon Pancakes” song in front of a packed room, then Sam meets up with Jeremy Shada (voice of Finn), Niki Yang (voice of BMO), Tom Kenny (voice of Ice King), Olivia Olsen (voice of Marceline), all of them thought the last panel was really emotional as it was one last goodbye to the show. The show’s voice acting cast ended the panel with a singalong of the show’s theme song, Sam also asks the cast to perform some of his favourite lines from the show.

Adventure Time fans shouldn’t worry that much that the show is coming to an end, as BOOM Comics (under their Kaboom imprint) are releasing Season Eleven in comic book form, which means fans will be able to find out what happens after the aftermath of the Great Gum War although the show has technically ended, Eisner Award-winning writer Sonny Liew will be writing the comic and will feature artwork by Marina Julia and also main cover art by Jorge Corona, along with variant covers by Julie Benbasset, Audrey Mok and Paul Pope.
Sam then heads over to the Teen Titans Go! To The Movies advanced screening event and meets up with the movie’s/show’s cast, Greg Cipes even dressed up as Beast Boy for the event (including green makeup and pointy ears!), Sam asks them what’s it’s like working with Will Arnett and Nicolas Cage. Teen Titans Go! To The Movies will be released in cinemas across the United States this Friday (27th July).
That’s the end of part one and pretty much covers the first half of CN’s events at San Diego Comic Con, more to come out in part two next week, including the main Steven Universe panel and the “Cartoon Network Creators: Drawing on Inspiration” mega panel featuring show creators Matt Burnett and Ben Levin (Craig of the Creek), Daniel Chong (We Bare Bears), Diego Molano (Victor and Valentino) and Julia Pott (Summer Camp Island) and the creator of OK K.O.!
