Cartoon Network At MIPTV 2017 Convention In Cannes, France

This week (03/04/2017 – 06/04/2017) was the MIPTV (Marché International des Programmes de Télévision, English: Television Programmes International Market) convention in Cannes, France, a major event in the television content market calendar. The MIPTV convention is an opportunity for broadcasters and content creators to promote their shows and to potentially sell broadcast rights to broadcasters.

Turner (owners of Cartoon Network and Boomerang) was present at the convention; promoting their programming for children and for general audiences, including productions from TNT and TBS in the United States as well as Cartoon Network Studios and Williams Street (Adult Swim). Two Cartoon Network Studios productions, in particular, have generated a lot of interest – The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10. So far, rights for The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10 have been picked by British children’s free-to-air channel, CITV, Gulli in France and Stan, a SVOD (Subscription Video on-demand) service in Australia. Disney Channel Germany and TV5 in the Philippines have purchased rights to air the new Powerpuff Girls series, while GMA in the Philippines has picked up the the rights to air Ben 10.

Other promoted programming from Cartoon Network other than The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10 include Mighty Magiswords, The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, We Bare Bears and also Boomerang’s original series – The Happos Family. Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken and Samurai Jack were also promoted.

MIPTV also has a sister convention that runs in October called MIPCOM. MIPCOM has a side event called MIPJunior which is a major international children’s media industry convention.

Turner has today revealed details of key shows from its extensive programming line-up to have been sold across international markets, as well as the strong slate of new and returning series that it will present at MIPTV 2017.

Following its recent surge in original content for TNT and TBS, TNT drama Good Behavior has been picked up by OCS (France), Telecom Italia (Italy), Fox (Finland), Cellcom and HOT (Israel), Stan (Australia), and NEON and SKY (New Zealand). The show is now available to audiences in more than 20 markets worldwide. Added to this, new TBS comedy Search Party has been sold to All4 (UK), OCS (France) and Cellcom (Israel), with other deals on the horizon. Both shows have been renewed for a second season.

From its kids’ portfolio, Cartoon Network’s two 2016 franchise revivals The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10 are also generating significant interest from international buyers. To date, both shows have been snapped up by CITV (UK), Gulli (France) and Stan (Australia), while Disney Channel (Germany) and TV5 (Philippines) have picked up The Powerpuff Girls and GMA (Philippines) has picked up Ben 10.

Alongside these, Turner is also bringing a varied and exciting set of programming to MIPTV. This includes: new dramas 4 Blocks (from TNT Serie in Germany) and Will (TNT), the former having recently premiered at the prestigious Berlinale Film Festival and lined up for screenings at MIPTV (presented by series creator Quirin Berg) and Series Mania in France; new comedies I’m Sorry and Those Who Can’t (both truTV); Adult Swim’s hit animated series Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken and Samurai Jack; and kids’ series Mighty Magiswords, The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, We Bare Bears (all Cartoon Network) and first Boomerang Original The Happos Family.

Final Uncle Grandpa Recording Session

Eric Bauza (the voice of Belly Bag in Uncle Grandpa) has announced that the final voice recording session for Cartoon Network’s Uncle Grandpa animated series was recorded yesterday. The show premiered in 2013 and a total of five seasons were produced. Uncle Grandpa is known for its nonsensical humour, visual gags, catchphrases and pure randomness, the show follows a man who’s everyone’s Uncle and Grandpa and visits people to help solve their problems, his close friends include a dinosaur named Mr. Gus, a Belly Bag and a slice of pizza named Pizza Steve. Nick Edwards, one of the show’s animators won a Creative Arts Emmy in 2014 in the “Outstanding Individual in Animation” category, for his work in the episode “Afraid of the Dark”.

New Mobile Game: Justice League Action Run

Last week, Warner Bros. Entertainment released a mobile game based on DC Comics’ latest animated series – Justice League Action, the new game is a “running” game with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Firestorm and Cyborg as playable characters. There are a total of 150 mission based levels, in each level the player will have to run, slide, fly and blast through obstacles. In the game, the player will get to fight the Joker, Darkseid, Lex Luthor and Lobo.

The Powerpuff Girls To Premiere On Disney Channel Germany On Monday 20th March

Everyone’s favourite superheroines will be premiering on an unlikely channel in Germany – Disney Channel on Monday 20th March, episodes will air Monday to Friday at 3.55pm. In November 2016, it was announced that Disney Channel Germany has brought the free-to-air broadcasting rights to The Powerpuff Girls, while Cartoon Network Germany has the pay-TV first-run rights for the show.

Cartoon Network Nordic’s Morgon Kubben New Graphics

Cartoon Network Nordic (the version of Cartoon Network that broadcasts to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland) has given their Morgon Kubben (Morning Club) breakfast-time programming block a graphics refresh, the block now features retro 1980’s neon graphics combined with cartoon character model animations from Cartoon Network’s Dimensional rebrand package.

Everyone’s favourite superheroines – The Powerpuff Girls are flying their way to two free-to-air digital terrestrial channels in Europe next month. The news was announced by Turner yesterday (31/01/2017) coinciding with the Spielwarenmesse Toy Fair 2017 (1st-6th February) in Nuremberg, Germany.

As reported on this blog last November, Disney Channel Germany has brought the broadcasting rights to the 2016 rebooted series. It has also emerged that French children’s channel – Gulli has also brought the FTA rights to The Powerpuff Girls. Both Gulli and Disney Channel will start airing episodes from March this year. More broadcasting rights deals are currently in the pipeline.

Gulli has also aired Cartoon Network’s The Amazing World of Gumball and Disney Channel Germany is currently airing episodes of We Bare Bears.

The addition of The Powerpuff Girls on free-to-air children’s channels will help to maximise exposure of The Powerpuff Girls franchise especially as a range of toys (from master toy licensee Spin Master) and merchandise is in the process of being rolled out across Europe.

In Spain, The Powerpuff Girls airs on Boing (a joint venture of Cartoon Network’s Turner Broadcasting System Europe and Mediaset España). From this month in Spain, a range of Powerpuff Girls toys will be available to buy from major hypermarket chains including Carrefour, Alcampo and Eroski as well as department store chain El Corte Inglés and toy retailer Toys “R” Us and independent retailers Juguettos, Toy Planet, Mapa, Dimasa, Poly and many more.

The Powerpuff Girls premiered on free-to-view kids channel – CITV (Children’s Independent Television) in the UK last November, it became the most watched commercial show for girls aged 4-9 in the last quarter of 2016. Powerpuff Girls toys are now available to buy in the UK at Argos and The Entertainer.

In the Arab world, a free version of Cartoon Network called Cartoon Network Arabic airs The Powerpuff Girls (alongside premium versions – Cartoon Network MENA English and Cartoon Network Hindi). In the United Arab Emirates, Toy Store holds exclusive retail rights over Powerpuff Girls toys. Dubai is also home to IMG Worlds of Adventure, the theme park has a Cartoon Network zone and features a Powerpuff Girls themed ride – Mojo Jojo’s Robot Rampage

The popularity of The Powerpuff Girls is soaring across the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region with 38 million people having watched the show since its premiere. In December 2016, the show also reached one in two kids in South Africa, Spain, Romania and Portugal and one in three kids in Hungary, Denmark, Sweden, Poland and United Arab Emirates.

Leading up to the opening of Spielwarenmesse 2017 (1st-6th February), Cartoon Network EMEA today unveils exciting developments for its brand-new series of The Powerpuff Girls. With the brand’s popularity rapidly accelerating, Cartoon Network is now rolling-out the toy range at leading EMEA retailers and also boosting broadcast exposure through the signing of new free-to-air deals.

Turner’s Cartoon Network launched the brand-new series of The Powerpuff Girls (40 x 11 minutes) worldwide last April and now the first wave of product has begun hitting shelves across EMEA. The merchandise roll-out is being spearheaded by the global master toy range from Spin Master with fashion, accessories, gifting, homewares, personal care, FMCG and back-to-school products following soon.

In EMEA, last November saw the show debut on CITV in the UK – becoming the #1 commercial show for girls aged 4-9 in Q4 2016 – and in March, The Powerpuff Girls will also launch on Gulli in France and on Disney Channel in Germany. Added to this, in Italy the show is already free-to-air on Boing (a joint venture between Turner and Mediaset) where it has become the most viewed show of all kids’ channels in its prime-time slot.
