Cartoon Network Celebrates 20th Anniversary Of The Powerpuff Girls Animated Series

This year, Cartoon Network will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Powerpuff Girls, the full series premiered on Cartoon Network in the United States on 18th November 1998, the show eventually became one of Cartoon Network’s most iconic animated series appealing to both girls and boys all over the world. The animated series followed the daily-lives of three unlikely superheroes, three kindergarten-aged (school-aged in the 2016 reboot) girls named Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, it’s their duty to save Townsville and the world from destruction before bedtime while still trying to live a normal childhood. The 20th anniversary celebrations will begin next month with the global rollout of new episodes, events and products that will continue into 2019. As seen in the Cartoon Network USA 2018 preview video, Bliss will also be returning to the show this year.

The original series was created by Craig McCracken who later created another Cartoon Network hit Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends, for the rebooted series which launched in 2016, Nick Jennings and Bob Boyle serve as executive producers.

In 2017, The Powerpuff Girls won a “Best National Family Series” Gracie Award. The Gracie Awards recognises high-quality programming created by women, for women and about women in media and entertainment. The graphical assets from the animated series have been utilised in Cartoon Network’s commitment to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education, including Google’s Made with Code GIF and the Scratch programming language developed by MIT Media Lab.

Cartoon Network announced today that The Powerpuff Girls will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. Everyone’s favourite superheroines – The Powerpuff Girls are flying their way to two free-to-air digital terrestrial channels in Europe next month. The news was announced by Turner yesterday (31/01/2017) coinciding with the Spielwarenmesse Toy Fair 2017 (1st-6th February) in Nuremberg, Germany.

As reported on this blog last November, Disney Channel Germany has brought the broadcasting rights to the 2016 rebooted series. It has also emerged that French children’s channel – Gulli has also brought the FTA rights to The Powerpuff Girls. Both Gulli and Disney Channel will start airing episodes from March this year. More broadcasting rights deals are currently in the pipeline.

Gulli has also aired Cartoon Network’s The Amazing World of Gumball and Disney Channel Germany is currently airing episodes of We Bare Bears.

The addition of The Powerpuff Girls on free-to-air children’s channels will help to maximise exposure of The Powerpuff Girls franchise especially as a range of toys (from master toy licensee Spin Master) and merchandise is in the process of being rolled out across Europe.

In Spain, The Powerpuff Girls airs on Boing (a joint venture of Cartoon Network’s Turner Broadcasting System Europe and Mediaset España). From this month in Spain, a range of Powerpuff Girls toys will be available to buy from major hypermarket chains including Carrefour, Alcampo and Eroski as well as department store chain El Corte Inglés and toy retailer Toys “R” Us and independent retailers Juguettos, Toy Planet, Mapa, Dimasa, Poly and many more.

The Powerpuff Girls premiered on free-to-view kids channel – CITV (Children’s Independent Television) in the UK last November, it became the most watched commercial show for girls aged 4-9 in the last quarter of 2016. Powerpuff Girls toys are now available to buy in the UK at Argos and The Entertainer.

In the Arab world, a free version of Cartoon Network called Cartoon Network Arabic airs The Powerpuff Girls (alongside premium versions – Cartoon Network MENA English and Cartoon Network Hindi). In the United Arab Emirates, Toy Store holds exclusive retail rights over Powerpuff Girls toys. Dubai is also home to IMG Worlds of Adventure, the theme park has a Cartoon Network zone and features a Powerpuff Girls themed ride – Mojo Jojo’s Robot Rampage

The popularity of The Powerpuff Girls is soaring across the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region with 38 million people having watched the show since its premiere. In December 2016, the show also reached one in two kids in South Africa, Spain, Romania and Portugal and one in three kids in Hungary, Denmark, Sweden, Poland and United Arab Emirates.

Leading up to the opening of Spielwarenmesse 2017 (1st-6th February), Cartoon Network EMEA today unveils exciting developments for its brand-new series of The Powerpuff Girls. With the brand’s popularity rapidly accelerating, Cartoon Network is now rolling-out the toy range at leading EMEA retailers and also boosting broadcast exposure through the signing of new free-to-air deals.

Turner’s Cartoon Network launched the brand-new series of The Powerpuff Girls (40 x 11 minutes) worldwide last April and now the first wave of product has begun hitting shelves across EMEA. The merchandise roll-out is being spearheaded by the global master toy range from Spin Master with fashion, accessories, gifting, homewares, personal care, FMCG and back-to-school products following soon.

In the UAE, where Cartoon Network Arabic is free-to-air, the toy range including playsets and plush launched exclusively at Toy Store last November following its debut at the Cartoon Network Zone in IMG Worlds of Adventure in October 2016. While in the UK, 21st January saw the toys launch at Argos through its catalogue and online, and The Entertainer also introduced the range into stores and online on 26th January. Relating to Brand Licencing Europe 2016, Cartoon Network and Licence Global have announced licensees and upcoming merchandise for The Amazing World of Gumball most particularly in Iberia (Spain and Portugal) and Central and Eastern Europe, below is a list of existing and upcoming deals relating to the show:

In Spain and Portugal, Gumball toys made by Simba, Play by Play, Comansi and Fournier have already been released. Norma has launched a The Amazing World of Gumball comic in May this year, with Devir and Goody holding the publishing license for the show in Portugal.

In terms of bags and stationary, Karactermania has launched their range of Gumball bags and stationery, new licensees also include Cife (stationery), Continente (accessories) and Erik Group (stationery).

Spanish department store chain El Corte Inglés are debuting a line of Gumball themed kids’ nightwear and clothing, kidswear retailer Zippy is also launching their range. Astro Europa will be producing a range of accessories for sale at Portuguese hypermarket company Continente and Spanish cake accessories supplier deKora.

In Poland and Romania, Cartoon Network has launched fashion, housewares and back-to-school products this autumn, more products will be released in 2017. Also in Romania, Total Office has launched its back-to-school product range. In Poland, Reserved Kids and E Plus M (LLP SA) have launched a Gumball clothing range at Auchan, Verte debuted its stationery line and Carbotex launched its “Gumball” bed linen. Cartoon Network have made a partnership deal with Fruitella (Perfetti Van Melle) for a Gumball promotion supported by digital, social media and in-store branding.
