Steven Universe Wins GLAAD Award For Outstanding Kids And Family Programming

On Thursday (28th March) was the first round of the 2019 GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.

At the awards, Steven Universe became the first animated show to win a GLAAD Award in the “Outstanding Kids And Family Programming” category.

The GLAAD Media Awards celebrates the best of television and film with character representation from the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer) community. In 2018, Steven Universe was nominated in the same category (the first year the category was introduced) but was unsuccessful.

In the same category, Steven Universe had beaten Cartoon Network’s other show nomination – Adventure Time and also Disney Channel’s Andi Mack and two Netflix shows She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and Anne with an E.

In Steven Universe, same-sex relationships is a running theme, especially the relationship and marriage between Ruby and Sapphire (the two gems that forms Garnet), which was also the first same-sex marriage on mainstream children’s television.

The nomination list for the 2019 GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards has been publicly released and Cartoon Network Studios’ Steven Universe and Adventure Time have been nominated for an award in the “Outstanding Kids And Family Programming” category. The GLAAD Media Awards celebrates the best of television and film with character representation from the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer) community. In 2018, Steven Universe was nominated in the same category (the first year the category was introduced) and 2017 Steven Universe was nominated for GLAAD Media Award in the “Outstanding Comedy Series” category.

Both Steven Universe and Adventure Time both feature same-sex relationships, but in Steven Universe its more of a running theme, especially the relationship and marriage between Ruby and Sapphire (the two gems that forms Garnet), in the Adventure Time finale, it was revealed that Princess Bubblegum and Marceline are dating.

In the same category, Adventure Time and Steven Universe is competing against Disney Channel’s Andi Mack and two Netflix shows She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and Anne with an E.

Today (19/01/2018), the nomination list for the 29th Annual GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards was publicly released and Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe has been nominated in a brand new category created for the 2018 awards – “Outstanding Kids And Family Programming”, the GLAAD Media Awards celebrated the best of television and film with character representation from the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer) community. Last year, Steven Universe was nominated for GLAAD Media Award in the “Outstanding Comedy Series” category.

Steven Universe will competing against other nominees in the same category including Disney Channel’s Andi Mack, Amazon’s Danger and Eggs, Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins and Nickelodeon’s The Loud House.
