Cartoon Network Offers New Scholarship to CalArts Animation Students

Cartoon Network are now offering merit-based scholarships for students studying at the internationally renowned arts and animation university – CalArts (California Institute of the Arts). Many CalArts graduates work in Hollywood’s animation industry and Cartoon Network is no exception. Top Cartoon Network talent, including Genndy Tartakovsky (creator of Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack), Craig McCracken (The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends), Pendleton Ward (Adventure Time), Daniel Chong (We Bare Bears) and J.G. Quintel (Regular Show, Close Enough) all graduated from CalArts. Cartoon Network’s scholarship programme is now in its second year and will be awarded again later this year.

After a long relationship with CalArts, Cartoon Network are now offering an annual scholarship of $15,000 (USD) to two exceptionally talented students – Michelle Lam and Mariana Yovanovich. Michelle is completing her fourth year at the school and has previously interned at Cartoon Network, while international student, Mariana is in the last semester of her third year, the two students weren’t expecting a scholarship.

Regarding the new scholarship, the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cartoon Network Studios – Brian Miller said:

“We tap into talent from everywhere, but a lot of the CalArts talent in particular has risen up to places of show creators like Genndy and Craig, and that list continues to expand with people like Pen Ward and J.G. Quintel (“Regular Show”), and further from there to Daniel Chong (“We Bare Bears”), and it just continues. We have this very long history of talent coming from CalArts. It was probably about 2015 when we started talking to them about a scholarship as a way for us to pay back for the great relationship and great talent we’ve received from the school. They came up with a proposal for the scholarship program, explained to us how it would work and we were completely on board. Now we’re about to enter the second year of the program. There’s no application process. What we do is nominate based on merit and people who have done, ideally, an internship at Cartoon Network. We have a very robust mentoring program, so we have a pretty intimate knowledge of what’s up with the students, and these two have been exceptional students.”

CalArts’ School of Film/Video Dean Leighton Pierce said:

“We had kind of an informal relationship (with Cartoon Network) for years. Many, many alums go to Cartoon Network, so we wanted to take the relationship a step further. He explained that there were a series of meetings to figure out what would be best for the students and Cartoon Network. It wasn’t like someone called and said “Let’s do this!” It’s more like we said, “Let’s meet and talk about how we can make this a more robust and solid relationship”, and it grew from there.”

After receiving the scholarship, Michelle said:

“I felt very honored because Cartoon Network was my first internship. Not only did the scholarship help me with tuition and continuing my time here at CalArts, but it felt like I was somewhat accepted by the industry, or that there is a chance or hope for me to enter an industry that I’ve dreamed of being a part of since I was a little kid”.

Mariana also said:

“Because I’m an international student, I don’t have many options for scholarships besides what the college can give me. For me, this was such a financial relief. I’m never quite sure if I’m going to be able to come back for another year. But the scholarship took care of her for this third year. I have another year to go, I think I will be able to come back for a fourth year and graduate. Fingers crossed.”

Regarding Mariana’s situation, Leighton Pierce also added:

“It’s really great when a student actually stays in the school because they’re able to get a scholarship. And it’s great that Cartoon Network supplied this for us.”

Today (21/08/2017), Warner Bros Home Entertainment has announced that Cartoon Network’s/Adult Swim’s Samurai Jack will be having a complete series release on Blu-ray and Digital HD, for the very first time you will be able to watch the adventures of everyone’s favourite samurai from the very beginning all the way to the very end at any time you like. The Blu-ray and Digital HD collection will be released in the United States on Tuesday 17th October and will cost $112.99 SRP.

The complete collection will feature all sixty-two episodes (seasons one to five) from Genndy Tartakovsky’s critically acclaimed creation remastered completely in high definition, an exclusive metal art print, exclusive featurettes, behind the scenes extras and special commentary, this is the ultimate and definitive collection for any Samurai Jack fan.

Samurai Jack season five will also be getting a separate individual release on DVD and Blu-ray, the season five release will feature pitch movies for five episodes and an exclusive featurette – The Evolution of Jack. The season five home video release will also be available on Tuesday 17th October in the United States and will cost $24.98 SRP for DVD version and $29.98 SRP for the Blu-ray version. The soundtrack for Samurai Jack season five will be released sometime this autumn, the soundtrack will feature twenty-two tracks produced by Tyler Bates and composed by Joanne Higginbottom and Dieter Hartmann. The soundtrack will be available as a digital download and will be added to popular music streaming services.

Also, there will be a Samurai Jack: The Premiere Movie Event on Monday 16th October in cinemas across the United States. Adult Swim and Fathom Events are teaming up to organise the exclusive one-night cinema event where fans will get to see the first season movie remastered in high-definition on the big screen, also there will be other surprises too.

The internationally renowned San Diego Comic-Con will be mostly held at the San Diego Convention Center next week (Wednesday 19th July to Sunday 23rd July) and as with previous years, Cartoon Network will be hosting a series of panels featuring voice actors and show creators, autograph sessions and other special events. Thursday will mostly feature events for productions by Warner Bros. Animation that air on Cartoon Network, Friday is Cartoon Network’s main day at the convention with events for two productions by Cartoon Network Studios.

Starting off the Cartoon Network events at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, is a panel for Cartoon Network USA’s most popular show as of late – Teen Titans Go!, this will be a chance for fans to ask the show’s producers and voice actors their questions. Also at the panel, there will be an exclusive screening of an upcoming one-hour long Teen Titans Go! special!, could it be The Night Begins To Shine (aka The Day the Night Stopped Beginning to Shine and Became Dark Even Though It Was the Day) by any chance?

Following the Teen Titans Go! panel and screening, is a panel for a show that has yet to premiere on Cartoon Network called Unikitty!, which features the lovable (but at times, extremely angry) character from The Lego Movie. At the panel there will be a Q&A session and a special episode screening.

For those who prefer superheroes and action-animation, there will be a Justice League Action panel featuring a Q&A with the voice actors from the show and the with the show’s production team members, plus a screening of an all-new episode.

On Thursday evening at the convention, is the Cartoon Network Summertime Go! Screening and Costume Contest, an opportunity for Cartoon Network fans to see some exclusive premieres, also prizes are up for grabs those who take part in the Cartoon Network cartoon character costume contest. Kids aged 12 and under wearing a costume will receive a special prize. Guest judges include Ian Jones-Quartey (creator and voice of Rad for OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes), Greg Cipes (voice of Stinkfly in Ben 10 and voice of Beast Boy in Teen Titans Go!), Zach Callison (voice of Steven in Steven Universe), Deedee Magno-Hall (voice of Pearl in Steven Universe), and Michaela Dietz (voice of Amethyst in Steven Universe) and the talented voice actor who connects all four shows together – Eric Bauza!

Kicking off Friday at 10am on the convention is the OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes panel, fans will get to see exclusive content and experience the superpowered and action-packed world of Lakewood Plaza Turbo. Ian-Jones Quartey, the show’s creator and voice of Rad, Toby Jones (the show’s co-executive producer), Courtenay Taylor (voice of K.O.), Kate Flannery (voice of Carol), and Dan Vader (lead writer/designer, for the brand new OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes game at Capybara Games) will all be there. The panel will be moderated by Alanah Pearce from IGN.

Immediately after the OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes panel is the Steven Universe panel, which will include never-before-seen footage, exciting announcement and a Q&A for fans to ask questions about Cartoon Network’s cult hit. The panel will feature the show’s creator – Rebecca Sugar, Deedee Magno-Hall (the voice of Pearl), Michaela Dietz (voice of Amethyst), Estelle (voice of Garnet), and A.J. Michalka (voice of Stevonnie) with half-Gem/half-human Steven Universe Zach Callison as half-guest/half-moderator!

Last but not least on Saturday, there’s a panel for Cartoon Network’s newly revived show – Ben 10, panelists include Greg Cipes (voice of Stinkfly), John DiMaggio (voice of Four Arms), Montse Hernandez (voice of Gwen), Roger Craig Smith (voice of Diamondhead), Tara Strong (voice of Ben Tennyson), John Fang (executive producer), Joe Casey (writer/creator, Man of Action Entertainment), and moderator Eric Bauza. There will be games and giveaways too, it will be so incredible that it will be out of this world!

At the last of San Diego Comic Con 2017 (Sunday 23rd July), there will be another panel for Steven Universe but with a more relaxed and conversational tone, the panel is for the new art book – Steven Universe: Art and Origins, Rebecca Sugar will be joining with Ian Jones-Quartey and the writer of the book – Chris McDonnell, during the session they will talking about what influenced the concept of the show, the development and design of the characters and the music. There will also be a fan Q&A.
