Interview Summary With Victor And Valentino Creator Diego Molano On Turner’s Blog
Turner – the company that owns Cartoon Network* has posted an interview with Victor and Valentino creator – Diego Molano on their blog. The brand new Cartoon Network Studios original series premiered in the United States and Latin America today (30th March). Victor and Valentino is Cartoon Network’s first show based around Mesoamerican folklore – most particularly Mayan and Aztec civilisations. The show is also the first CN original series to have Hispanic lead characters.
To make sure that the new show was presented in a genuine and respectful way to the Latino and Hispanic community, CN’s Victor and Valentino production team partnered with TurnerUno, Turner’s Business Resource Group for Latino and Hispanic employees. TurnerUno helped out with the show’s marketing and promotions, and TurnerUno shared their opinions and input on how the show should be portrayed.
Below is an interview summary with Diego Molano, the full interview can be viewed on the link below:
Interview Summary of Turner’s interview with Victor and Valentino creator – Diego Molano
According to Diego, myths and legends inspired him through school and all the way through university, Diego’s favorite mythology was Mesoamerican mythology, which includes the legends and folklore of the Aztecs, Toltecs, Olmecs, Mayans, Incans and Muiscas. Diego mentioned that he noticed that Mesoamerican mythology isn’t discussed as much as Greek, Roman, Egyptian or Norse mythology.
Diego said he was astounded that someone hasn’t made an animated show based on Mesoamerican mythology before, he feels lucky that Cartoon Network gave him the chance to make the show. In the interview, Diego also revealed that he’s the voice of Victor in the English and Latin American Spanish dubs of the show and he’s still learning to be a voice actor.
Before working on Victor and Valentino, Diego worked with OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes show creator – Ian Jones-Quartey and absorbed as much knowledge about animated show production as he possibly could, he also gained knowledge from working on Adult Swim’s Black Dynamite and also on the 2016 reboot of The Powerpuff Girls.
Diego also mentioned that he was sneaky and mischievous as a kid, which means Victor is loosely based on himself, he also got in trouble quite often as a child, but he also mentioned he learnt a new lesson every time he misbehaved, same goes for Victor who ends up learning a new lesson which softens his heart a little bit more. For this reason, Diego hopes that kids will learn something from the show, like the lessons he had as a kid.
Diego also mentioned that he used to be terrified of ghosts and was paralysed by anything supernatural because his mother used scary stories as a tactic to make him behave, his grandfather, who’s also a scientist, claimed that there’s no such thing as the supernatural and his mother was just talking nonsense, he grew up a bit in his early teen years and stopped believing such things.
Finally, Diego talks about the first season of Victor and Valentino, he explains that the first season will be a chance to learn about the characters and get to know them, including their quirks. There’s many side characters in the show that are full of personality, to the extent that Diego and the show’s writers wanted to include them in every episode and deciding which characters should be in each episode is a difficult decision.
* Turner is currently undergoing a separation process, but remains to be a going concern until restructuring is complete, all of Turner’s kids channels (Cartoon Network, Boomerang etc.) are currently in the process of moving to Warner Bros’s brand new Global Kids and Young Adults division.
