Gangreen Gang Leader And Villain – Ace From The Powerpuff Girls Joins The Gorillaz

The British animated band – Gorillaz has announced a new band member, and its someone very familiar, somewhat random and unexpected. According to the band’s fictional narrative, the band’s bassist – Murdoc Niccals is in prison, and the band had no choice but to replace him, well at least for the time being so they can continue as a band. Speculation sparked off when the main artist for the Gorillaz – Jamie Hewlett posted a couple of pictures on Instagram depicting someone resembling the leader of the Gangreen Gang from Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls – Ace. Although Ace and his gang are technically antagonists in the show, The Powerpuff Girls only see them as teenage delinquents and dismiss them as nothing but a “nuisance”. In the first picture, Ace was with fellow band member – Noodle at the Kentucky Derby, in the second picture, it shows Ace (without his face in full view), but wearing a purple jacket with a “Ace” playing card attached to it. Ace also appeared on Gorillaz’s summer tour poster.

All speculation was laid to rest when the band sent out a new newsletter which contained some details about the new band member and when the band’s main musician and creative music lead – Damon Albarn was interviewed by UK national radio station BBC Radio 6. According to Damon, Ace was chosen as the new band member, because of the similarities he has with Murdoc. Cartoon Network has given the band permission to use Ace as a character.

On Thursday 31st May, Gorillaz released their latest music video entitled “Humility” starring actor/musician/comedian Jack Black, in the video Ace is his usual troublemaking self and just like the original Powerpuff Girls, he bursts a basketball with a knife and ruins the fun for everyone. Ace appears to be older too, he’s going slightly bald. Surprisingly, The Powerpuff Girls isn’t the only Cartoon Network show the music video is connected to, its also loosely connected to The Amazing World of Gumball, former compositing supervisor and show writer – Guillaume Cassuto helped out with compositing in the music video, as the music video featured animation layered on a live-action video backdrop which is similar to Gumball’s mixed-media art style. Also creative agency – Blinkink helped out with the music video’s production, their sister division – Blink Industries collaborated with Cartoon Network to produce the Gumball episode “The Puppets” and also the short side-series “Waiting for Gumball”.

Gorillaz’s newest album – “The Now Now” is set to be released on Friday 29th June.
