Cartoon Network USA Celebrates 20 Years Of The Powerpuff Girls
The Powerpuff Girls, one of Cartoon Network’s most successful and iconic animated shows will turn twenty years old this Sunday (18th September). On 18th November 1998, The Powerpuff Girls premiered for the first time as a full-production animated series on Cartoon Network USA, since then it has aired in all four corners of the globe. The animated series followed the daily lives of three unlikely superheroes, three young girls named Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, it’s their duty to save Townsville and the world from destruction before bedtime while still trying to balance a normal childhood. Also not forgetting Bliss, the fourth Powerpuff Girl that sometimes make an appearance in the show. The series was so successful and made such an impact that Cartoon Network decided to revive the animated series, with the show’s current incarnation premiering in 2016.
Cartoon Network EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) already made an announcement for the show’s 20th anniversary back in January (which mentioned new episodes and merchandise), but as it’s The Powerpuff Girls 20th anniversary this week, Cartoon Network USA has announced plans for the show’s birthday.
This week, Cartoon Network has started off the celebrations with a year-long “Empowerpuff” internship programme, Empowerpuff is a portmanteau of “empower” and “Powerpuff”. CN’s Empowerpuff programme are looking for people over the age of 18 to become official ambassadors for The Powerpuff Girls brand which will involve creating content for CN’s social media accounts and contributing to production and marketing efforts. CN are looking for people who are excited to create and share the positively powerful messages of sisterhood and empowerment and are able to work six to twelve hours a week for 12 months.

For the 20th anniversary and also for the Empowerpuff Programme, Cartoon Network has teamed up with knitwear company – Lingua Franca for an “Empowerpuff” made-to-order sweater, all proceed will go to New York’s Lower Eastside Girls Club, an organisation that helps young girls that are affected by poverty to build a successful and healthy future.
Also today, Cartoon Network has released a new Powerpuff Girls themed music video, featuring the work of five young female animators from different parts of the world including Delfina Perez Adan from Argentina; Dahee Jeong from South Korea; Xiya Lan from China; Réka Bucsi from Hungary and from the United States – Jasmin Lai and Marlène Beaube. The new music video has been released on social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. The music video will be split into seven second spots.
Furthermore, Cartoon Network USA will livestream episodes of The Powerpuff Girls on their website (https://www.cartoonnetwork.com) for 72 hours (three days straight) starting from this Friday (16th November).

Cartoon Network USA has also uploaded a timelapse video showcasing the different kinds of Powerpuff Girls merchandise now available, the merchandise in the video has been positioned to form Buttercup’s head.
