Skwigly Animation Composed Podcast With The Amazing World Of Gumball Composer Ben Locket

British online animation magazine website – Skwigly has started a new podcast about music in animation, which includes interviews with composers and various music clips. The second episode features an interview with Ben Locket, the music composer for Cartoon Network’s The Amazing World of Gumball. Music in television and films is considered to be an important creative element, as it sets the tone and emotions expressed in the scene and as a result, it makes it easier for the viewer to comprehend what’s happening in the scene and to interpret the characters’ feelings. Music can be used to express all sorts of emotions and situations including happiness, sadnessness, fear, mystery and suspense. The intensity of the scene can be expressed by increasing or lowering the tempo of the music or increasing or decreasing the volume.

According to the interview, Ben Locket first met up with Ben Bocquelet (creator of The Amazing World of Gumball) while he was still working in the advertising industry. Ben Bocquelet had an idea for a new cartoon and was planning to pitch it to Cartoon Network’s new development studio in London, but he needed a composer and Ben Locket had the skills and talent required for the job. Composing music for a show can be hard work, not only it involves writing the music and strict deadlines but due to Gumball’s wide variety and themes, Ben Locket has to find different people from various genres of music ranging from hip-hop artists to opera singers to produce music for the show. As the show progressed, music production got into a rhythm (pun unintended), it became more prepared and organised. Every episode requires different music and some music is reused occasionally. Music production for the sixth season for The Amazing World Of Gumball is underway and Ben has been working on some brass band music for the show, the sixth season of Gumball will have over forty episodes.

Ben Locket has also worked on a two-part film – Revolting Rhymes, based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, the film premiered on BBC One in the UK last Christmas. In May this year, the film had a live music performance at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, Ireland. Also in the podcast’s second episode is an interview with Gareth Davies – the composer for CBBC’s Scream Street.

Not much details about Craig of the Creek has been publicly released except for a brief description and an image, the new show is set in a kid utopia of untamed wilderness. Craig, the show’s main character, and his two best friends traverse and venture through this strange land of where tribes of children reign over tree forts and dirt bike ramps. The new show is created by two Steven Universe show writers – Matt Burnett and Ben Levin.
