Steven Universe Wins GLAAD Award For Outstanding Kids And Family Programming

On Thursday (28th March) was the first round of the 2019 GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.

At the awards, Steven Universe became the first animated show to win a GLAAD Award in the “Outstanding Kids And Family Programming” category.

The GLAAD Media Awards celebrates the best of television and film with character representation from the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer) community. In 2018, Steven Universe was nominated in the same category (the first year the category was introduced) but was unsuccessful.

In the same category, Steven Universe had beaten Cartoon Network’s other show nomination – Adventure Time and also Disney Channel’s Andi Mack and two Netflix shows She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and Anne with an E.

In Steven Universe, same-sex relationships is a running theme, especially the relationship and marriage between Ruby and Sapphire (the two gems that forms Garnet), which was also the first same-sex marriage on mainstream children’s television.

Teen Titans Go! Nominated For 2019 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award In The “Favourite Cartoon” Category, Teen Titans Go! To The Movies Receives “Favourite Female Voice From An Animated Movie” Nomination

Warner Bros. Animation’s and Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans Go! has been nominated in the “Favourite Cartoon” category for Nickelodeon’s 2019 Kids’ Choice Awards, also the movie that’s based on the animated series – Teen Titans Go! To The Movies has also received a “Favourite Female Voice from an Animated Movie” nomination for Kristen Bell’s voice acting performance as Jade Wilson. In the Favourite Cartoon category, Teen Titans Go! will compete against Nickelodeon’s ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Loud House and SpongeBob SquarePants and also DreamWorks Animation’s and Netflix’s – The Boss Baby: Back in Business.

In the “Favourite Female Voice from an Animated Movie” category Kristen Bell will compete against Gal Gadot (Shank, Ralph Breaks the Internet), Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), Selena Gomez (Mavis, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation), Yara Shahidi (Brenda, WB’s Smallfoot) and Zendaya (Meechee, WB’s Smallfoot).

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and DC Comics’ movie – Aquaman has been nominated in the “Favourite Movie” category, with Jason Momoa (portrayed as Aquaman in the movie) also being nominated as “Favourite Superhero”. Warner Bros’s Interactive Entertainment’s LEGO The Incredibles video game has been nominated in the “Favourite Video Game” category. Warner Bros. Television’s and DC Comics’ The Flash has also been nominated in the “Favourite TV Drama” category.

The Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards is an annual awards ceremony event where children from around the world can vote for their favourite TV shows, video games, movies, music and much more. This year’s awards ceremony will be held at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, on Saturday 23rd March 2019 and will be broadcasting live on the Nickelodeon TV channel from 8pm ET/PT. The awards ceremony will be hosted by hip hop DJ and record producer – DJ Khaled.

DHX Media’s Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs And Supernoobs Nominated For 2019 Canadian Screen Awards; Wishfart Also Receives Five Nominations

DHX Media, the producers of two animated shows that air on Cartoon Network worldwide – Supernoobs and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs have received Canadian Screen Awards 2019 nominations for both shows. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: The Series has been nominated in the “2019 Best Animated Program or Series” category, also the show’s composer – Steffan Andrews has been nominated in the “2019 Original Best Music, Animation” category specifically for the episode – “Something Fishy”. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs has also been nominated twice in the “Best Performance, Animation” category for voice performances by Seán Cullen (voice of Tim Lockwood, Mayor Shelbourne and Old Rick) and Clé Bennett (voice of Earl Devereaux).

DHX’s Supernoobs has been nominated in the “Best Sound, Animation” category, credited to Mike Mancuso, Ryan Eligh, Joe Tetreau, Dante Winkler, Eric Mattar-Hurlbut and Paul Talbott.

Another Canadian animated show – Wishfart has been nominated three times in the same category for “Best Writing, Animation” for the episodes “Does This Please The Jigmaster” (written by Emer Connon), “Litterfools Ain’t Cool” (written by show creators John Hazlett, Lienne Sawatsky and Dan Williams) and “Aw, Man!” (written by Stephanie Kaliner). Wishfart has also been nominated in the “Best Direction, Animation” category, specifically for animation work by Jason Groh in the episode – “We Can Eat Sand”. The show has also been nominated in the “Best Sound, Animation” category, credited to Scott McCrorie for the episode – “We Are Cheetah Face!”. Wishfart has aired on Cartoon Network UK and Cartoon Network Africa.

The 2019 Canadian Screen Awards: Broadcast Gala will air live on CBC on Sunday 31st March at 8pm (9pm AT/9.30pm NT).
