Steven Universe Nominated For GLAAD Award For Outstanding Comedy Series

This week, the nominee list for the 28th Annual GLADD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards was publicly released and Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe has been nominated in the “Outstanding Comedy Series” category, the GLADD Media Awards celebrated the best of television and film with character representation from the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer) community.

The gems featured in the show are technically genderless, but they’re perceived and appear to be female, the relationship between Ruby and Sapphire (the two gems that fused together to form the defacto leader of the Crystal Gems – Garnet) has been an important running plot device throughout the show’s run so far.

The 28th Annual GLADD Media Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles on Saturday 1st April and at the Hilton Midtown hotel in New York on Saturday 6th May.

Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards 2017 Cartoon Network Nominations

Two Cartoon Network shows have been nominated in the “Favourite Cartoon” category for Nickelodeon’s 2017 Kids Choice Awards. Both Cartoon Network’s The Amazing World of Gumball and Warner Bros. Animation’s Teen Titans Go! have been nominated for the award. The Amazing World of Gumball and Teen Titans Go! will face competition from animated shows that air on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons including SpongeBob SquarePants, Alvin!!! and the Chipmunks, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Loud House.

The Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards is an annual awards ceremony event where children from around the world can vote for their favourite TV shows, movies and music. The Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards is now in its 29th year; this year’s awards ceremony will be held at The Forum in Los Angeles, on 11th March 2017 and will be hosted by WWE wrestler – John Cena.

Cartoon Network has been nominated for three 2017 Kidscreen Awards. The Kidscreen Awards, is organised by children’s media news website – Kidscreen, the awards celebrates the best in children’s TV production, broadcasting and digital media.

Cartoon Network Studios’ We Bare Bears has been nominated in the Best Animated Series category and Cartoon Network Games’ The Powerpuff Girls: Flipped Out has been nominated for best game app for Tablet devices and Teen Titans Go!: Teeny Titans has been nominated for an award in the Best Smartphone App category. Winners will be announced at a special presentation event during Kidscreen Summit 2017 in Miami, Florida, USA on Tuesday 14th February 2017.

All children’s programming nominations will be reviewed and assessed by a panel of judges from the United States, United Kingdom and Canada including Andy Yeatman (Netflix), Sarah Muller (Channel 5), Amy Friedman (Sprout), Lucy Murphy (Sky), Grainne Rowe (Disney Channel EMEA), Jackie Edwards (BBC Children’s), Andrew Thomas (Hulu), Nina Hahn (Nickelodeon International) and Deirdre Brennan (Corus Kids, licencee of Cartoon Network Canada).

All digital media nominations will be reviewed and assessed by experts from the digital media industry including Angela Lin (YouTube), Azadeh Jamalian (Tiggly), Bill Shribman (WGBH), Jens Peter de Pedro (Monkimun), David Kleeman (Dubit), Eric Huang (Made in Me), Daniel Bays (Lightning Sprite Media) and Brenda Bisner (Baby Toes Media).
