This week (Monday 11th to Thursday 14th February) is the Kidscreen 2019 Summit at the InterContinental Hotel in Miami, Florida, USA, the Kidscreen Summit is an annual meetup of the international children’s entertainment industry organised by the children’s media publication – Kidscreen. As with previous years, representatives from Cartoon Network (from both the USA and EMEA teams) will be attending the summit, with CN related sessions starting from tomorrow up until the convention’s last day on Thursday. This year, Cartoon Network will attending events at Kidscreen Summit 2019 relating to children’s comedy, content acquisitions, speed pitching, utilising creative skills and product/service licensing.

Cartoon Network EMEA Names The Amazing World Of Gumball Executive Producer Sarah Fell As Director Of Original Series

Today (16th January), Turner EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) has promoted The Amazing World of Gumball Executive Producer – Sarah Fell to Director of Original Series, Kids EMEA (which covers all of Turner’s children’s channels including Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Cartoonito, Boing and also the Toonix streaming service). The announcement was made by Patricia Hidalgo, Chief Content Officer, Turner EMEA & International Kids Strategy.

In Sarah’s new role, she will be responsible for overseeing the development and production of all Turner Kids series across the EMEA region, including Cartoon Network Studios Europe’s Elliott From Earth which is currently in production and also has Gumball’s series director – Mic Graves serving as Creative Director, the show is created by former Gumball composition supervisor and show writer – Guillaume Cassuto. It will also be Sarah’s responsibility to find and develop new animation talent around the EMEA area.

Sarah Fell joined Turner in 2011 as producer of The Amazing World of Gumball, the show has won multiple awards including several BAFTA’s and an International Emmy Award. Sarah also oversaw production of Emile Award-winning series – The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe as well as Boomerang’s first European original – The Happos Family. Sarah started her animation production career at Aardman Animation in Bristol, UK (the studio is well known for claymation animated shorts, series and films including Wallace and Gromit, they also worked on 3D CGI series Chop Socky Chooks with Cartoon Network Europe along with Decode (now DHX Media) and Teletoon Canada). While working at Aardman, Sarah worked on several productions including Planet Sketch, Big Jeff and Shawn The Sheep spinoff – Timmy Time.

Turner EMEA has promoted The Amazing World of Gumball Producer, Sarah Fell, to Director of Original Series, Kids EMEA. The announcement was made today by Patricia Hidalgo, Chief Content Officer, Turner EMEA & International Kids Strategy, to whom Fell reports.

In her new role, Fell will be responsible for overseeing the development and production of all Turner Kids series across EMEA, including the recently-greenlit Elliott From Earth, which also has Gumball’s Mic Graves serving as Creative Director. In addition, she will be tasked with finding and developing new talent and ideas into content that can play out across Turner Kids platforms in the region.

Cartoon Network EMEA’s (Europe, Middle East Africa) The Amazing World of Gumball episode audio detection and quiz app – Gumball VIP is now having an international rollout after a successful trial on Cartoon Network UK during October half-term last year. The Gumball VIP mobile app (developed for Android and iOS) will now rollout to 10 different markets all over the world over the next six months including Italy (Cartoon Network Italy), The Philippines and Singapore (Cartoon Network Southeast Asia) by the end of 2018, followed by Australia and New Zealand (Cartoon Network Australia), Poland (Cartoon Network Poland), Romania (Cartoon Network Central Eastern Europe), Spain (Boing Spain), France (Cartoon Network France) and also a second rollout in the UK (Cartoon Network UK) in the first quarter of 2019.

The Gumball VIP app makes use of audio recognition technology, the app detects the episode of The Amazing World of Gumball the viewer is currently watching. After the app has successfully detected the episode, the app will then fetch questions relating to the episode to test the viewer’s knowledge, each question appears on the viewers phone at different points in the episode through the use of audio triggers. The app features licensed audio recognition technology from Austrian based start-up Tonio.

By answering questions correctly viewers are awarded stars, which can then unlock trophies. Last year, during Cartoon Network UK’s app experiment viewers could receive special codes to access digital prizes on the website and also had an opportunity to enter a prize draw competition. The app experiment has shown an interest in dual-screen interactivity as viewing ratings were increased by 44%.

Commenting on the successful Gumball VIP app, Patricia Hidalgo, Chief Content Officer, Turner EMEA & International Kids Strategy said: “Linear TV remains a key medium for kids, but what we need to do is ensure that it remains relevant in today’s world where there is a big shift in how our fans watch and engage with our content. Using this innovative technology allows us to do just that, by digitising the linear TV viewing experience and adding that all-important element of interactivity.”
