Cartoon Network At MIPTV 2017 Convention In Cannes, France

This week (03/04/2017 – 06/04/2017) was the MIPTV (Marché International des Programmes de Télévision, English: Television Programmes International Market) convention in Cannes, France, a major event in the television content market calendar. The MIPTV convention is an opportunity for broadcasters and content creators to promote their shows and to potentially sell broadcast rights to broadcasters.

Turner (owners of Cartoon Network and Boomerang) was present at the convention; promoting their programming for children and for general audiences, including productions from TNT and TBS in the United States as well as Cartoon Network Studios and Williams Street (Adult Swim). Two Cartoon Network Studios productions, in particular, have generated a lot of interest – The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10. So far, rights for The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10 have been picked by British children’s free-to-air channel, CITV, Gulli in France and Stan, a SVOD (Subscription Video on-demand) service in Australia. Disney Channel Germany and TV5 in the Philippines have purchased rights to air the new Powerpuff Girls series, while GMA in the Philippines has picked up the the rights to air Ben 10.

Other promoted programming from Cartoon Network other than The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10 include Mighty Magiswords, The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, We Bare Bears and also Boomerang’s original series – The Happos Family. Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken and Samurai Jack were also promoted.

MIPTV also has a sister convention that runs in October called MIPCOM. MIPCOM has a side event called MIPJunior which is a major international children’s media industry convention.

Turner has today revealed details of key shows from its extensive programming line-up to have been sold across international markets, as well as the strong slate of new and returning series that it will present at MIPTV 2017.

Following its recent surge in original content for TNT and TBS, TNT drama Good Behavior has been picked up by OCS (France), Telecom Italia (Italy), Fox (Finland), Cellcom and HOT (Israel), Stan (Australia), and NEON and SKY (New Zealand). The show is now available to audiences in more than 20 markets worldwide. Added to this, new TBS comedy Search Party has been sold to All4 (UK), OCS (France) and Cellcom (Israel), with other deals on the horizon. Both shows have been renewed for a second season.

From its kids’ portfolio, Cartoon Network’s two 2016 franchise revivals The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10 are also generating significant interest from international buyers. To date, both shows have been snapped up by CITV (UK), Gulli (France) and Stan (Australia), while Disney Channel (Germany) and TV5 (Philippines) have picked up The Powerpuff Girls and GMA (Philippines) has picked up Ben 10.

Alongside these, Turner is also bringing a varied and exciting set of programming to MIPTV. This includes: new dramas 4 Blocks (from TNT Serie in Germany) and Will (TNT), the former having recently premiered at the prestigious Berlinale Film Festival and lined up for screenings at MIPTV (presented by series creator Quirin Berg) and Series Mania in France; new comedies I’m Sorry and Those Who Can’t (both truTV); Adult Swim’s hit animated series Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken and Samurai Jack; and kids’ series Mighty Magiswords, The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, We Bare Bears (all Cartoon Network) and first Boomerang Original The Happos Family.

Vishal Dembla Appointed VP And General Manager For Turner Southeast Asia

This week (06/02/2017), Turner Southeast Asia has appointed a new vice president and general manager – Vishal Dembla. In his new role, Mr Dembla will oversee, lead and develop all of Turner’s entertainment and kids channel operations in the Southeast Asia region. This includes Cartoon Network and Boomerang.

Mr. Dembla will oversee ad-sales, content sales, programming, creative, channel distribution and marketing departments and will be based in Singapore.

In his previous role, Mr. Dembla was responsible for Turner’s distribution and content sales in Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, which has now expanded to Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Turner Asia Pacific has announced the establishment of a new Southeast Asia organization and appointment of a new regional lead to be based in Singapore.

Vishal Dembla has been named Vice President and General Manager of Turner Southeast Asia. In this new role, he has been tasked with growing all of Turner’s commercial and channel operations within this increasingly important region, as well as the day-to-day management of its kids and entertainment businesses in Southeast Asia.

“For the first time, we have aligned all our Southeast Asia efforts under one executive and these changes will enable Turner to better develop its growing business in this region,” commented Phil Nelson, Turner’s Managing Director of Southeast Asia Pacific and North Asia. “Vishal has been an integral member of our senior management team – forging new initiatives and driving growth – and is well-positioned for this new role.”

In addition to oversight of all commercial lines including ad-sales and content sales, Mr. Dembla will lead the region’s programming, creative services and marketing departments for all of Turner’s kids and entertainment brands. The team will also handle the network distribution side of the business – focusing on further expanding the reach of brands including CNN International, Warner TV, Oh!K, Cartoon Network and Boomerang in Southeast Asia.

In his previous capacity, Mr. Dembla was responsible for Turner’s distribution and content sales in Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. His expanded geographical remit now also includes Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Cartoon Network’s classic and family friendly animation sister channel – Boomerang will be launching in Taiwan for the first time on Monday 14th November. The pan-Asia-Pacific Boomerang feed is already available in 32 million homes across the region, the Taiwanese launch will expand the channel’s distribution and add an extra 1.6 million Kbro and Taiwan Mobile subscribers to its potential viewership.

From Boomerang’s debut on 14th November, viewers will be able to enjoy classic animation from the likes of Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo and Looney Tunes and also contemporary shows from Warner Bros. Animation and other independent studios such as Bunnicula, Talking Tom and Friends and also Grizzy and the Lemmings; which has been an kids media industry hit at the MIP Junior convention at Cannes this year.

Viewers in Taiwan will also be able to enjoy episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and watch animated movies on Sundays. Shows will be available in Mandarin Chinese audio and traditional Chinese subtitles. Cartoon Network is already the most popular international kids channel in Taiwan, its logical that Boomerang should follow in Cartoon Network’s footsteps and launch in the country, as Boomerang is Turner’s second most distributed animation channel.

The Boomerang Asia pan-feed originally launched on 1st September 2005, closed in 2012 and was revived on 1st January 2015 replacing Cartoonito Asia. The channel also has an companion mobile app called “Boomerang Watch and Play”, while using the app, people can watch Boomerang shows while playing a series of mini-games.

Boomerang Southeast Asia currently airs a programming block called “Caturdays” as the name suggests, it’s a block of shows featuring Boomerang’s resident cat characters airing on Saturdays: the block features episodes of Tom and Jerry, Silvester and Tweety, Pink Panther and Pals and The Garfield Show. Turner Asia-Pacific promoted “Caturdays” as a programming feature for the channel’s launch in Taiwan.

Boomerang, Turner’s global kids’ brand and companion channel to Cartoon Network, is now available in Taiwan for the first time.

With an additional 1.6 million subscribers across Kbro and Taiwan Mobile platforms, the agreement increases the channel’s distribution in Asia Pacific to 32 million households since the channel’s relaunch in late 2014.

From November 14, the all-animation network will have both Mandarin audio and traditional Chinese subtitles, boasting an impressive line-up of new series and movies programmed for both kids and their families.

In addition to the ever-popular Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo and Looney Tunes, new shows include Bunnicula, Talking Tom and the hilarious Grizzy and the Lemmings – the most-talked-about animated series at MIP Junior in Cannes last month. Other channel highlights in November feature new episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Sunday movies with Barbie and Tom and Jerry.

To complement the on-air offering regionally, Boomerang Watch and Play hosts both video and gaming content in a safe and fun app designed for tablets.
