Cartoon Network Owners Turner Partners With Chinese Animation Company UYoung To Develop A New Animation IP

Today (14th February) on the final day of Kidscreen Summit 2019 in Miami, Turner Asia-Pacific (the owners of Cartoon Network, Boomerang and POGO) has announced that they’ve formed a partnership with Chinese animation company – UYoung. The partnership also includes the development of a new IP (intellectual property), in the partnership, Turner will be providing their expertise in high quality animation production and international distribution. Details of what the IP will entail has yet to be announced but are expected to be released later this year.

In the Asia-Pacific region, Turner uses a virtual studio model by partnering with independent studios for animation projects and working with show creators and artists from across the region. UYoung is one of China’s leading children’s entertainment companies with offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and also in Los Angeles, USA.

Turner Asia Pacific and UYoung – the well-known Chinese animation company – have formalized their official partnership with an MOU (memorandum of understanding), announced this week at Kidscreen Summit in Miami.

The scope of the partnership includes the development of a new IP by UYoung. Turner – known in the kids entertainment space for its Cartoon Network, Boomerang and POGO brands – brings its production and international distribution experience of quality animation. The details of the IP are yet to be disclosed and are expected to be revealed later in 2019.

Ricky Ow, Turner Asia Pacific President, said: “We’ve been impressed by UYoung’s vision to develop a homegrown Chinese IP and launch it together with us both in China and internationally. We are looking forward to working closely with them on this, with a collaboration that brings together global talent to tell Chinese-inspired stories.”

In Asia Pacific, Turner adopts a virtual studio model for its original animation projects, identifying creators, artists and studios from right around the region – for global audiences.

Boomerang Buys International Broadcasting Rights To Mush-Mush And The Mushables Coming Soon In 2020

Turner’s classic and contemporary animation channel – Boomerang has acquired the rights to a brand new CGI-animated adventure comedy series called “Mush-Mush and the Mushables”. The brand new show follows the adventures of a community of lovable mushrooms. The new show will air on international versions of Boomerang as well as other Turner-owned children’s channels such as Cartoon Network, Boing and POGO in selected markets from 2020.

The brand new show is created by Flemish artist Elfriede de Rooster and the show is produced by La Cabane Productions in France as well as Thuristar in Belgium (the same studio behind Boomerang’s My Knight and Me), London-based CAKE Entertainment is distributing the new series. The show is produced by Perrine Gauthier and directed by Joeri Christiaen (the creator of My Knight & Me), in initial batch of episodes there will be a total of 52 episodes with a runtime of 11 minutes each.

Broadcasting rights to Mush-Mush And The Mushables has already been purchased by Canal+ and Piwi+ in France; VRT-Ketnet and RTBF-OUFtivi in Belgium; RTS in Switzerland; and RTL Telekids in the Netherlands.

The chief commercial officer and managing director of CAKE Entertainment – Ed Galton, made this statement in regards of the new series:

“We are delighted to be teaming up with Turner on the forthcoming Mush-Mush and the Mushables. Perrine, Joeri and their team are bringing to life the original drawings to create an engaging, warmhearted series about a community of lovable mushrooms and their funny adventures that children everywhere will enjoy.”

Turner India, the owner and operator of Cartoon Network and its sister channel – Pogo in India has launched its 13th annual School Contact Programme (SCP). Cartoon Network’s and Pogo’s SCP is one of India’s largest school outreach programmes. One million kids from around 1,100 schools will get to enjoy fun-filled activities with Cartoon Network’s SCP theme – “Masti ki Recess” and POGO’s theme – “Fun Bhi Fit Bhi”. The SCP will be held in schools located in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Lucknow, Ahmedabad and Surat. Both SCP themes will include interactive games, trivia, competitions and prizes.

With Cartoon Network’s ‘Masti ki Recess’ theme, schools will have an extra break filled with fun and interactive games with Cartoon Network’s characters and shows including Ben 10, Kris from Roll No.21, Oggy from Oggy and Cockroaches and We Bare Bears.

Pogo is having a health and fitness theme this year with “Fun Bhi Fit Bhi” featuring Pogo’s popular characters and shows including Chhota Bheem, Tik Tak Tail and Grizzy and the Lemmings and for the first time, kids will get to interact with their favourite cartoons in an audio-visual led activity.

While talking about this year’s School Contact Programme, Krishna Desai, executive director and network head-kids at Turner India said:
