Cartoon Network’s action-animation and Japanese anime programming block and international channel brand – Toonami will celebrate its 20th anniversary this Friday (17/03/2017) and Saturday (18/03/2017) with live streams, never-before-seen animated shorts and prize giveaways. The weekend ceremony will start with a Toonami Pre-Flight livestream on Friday at 8pm ET on Toonami’s website (http://www.toonami.com/PreFlight) with feature Jason DeMarco and Gill Austin, the iconic voices of Toonami’s 3D CGI presenters T.O.M (Steven Blum) and SARA (Dana Swanson), the live-stream will feature classic footage from the history of Toonami and an interview with Sean Akins – the co-creator of Toonami programming block.

Toonami first appeared as an afternoon programming block on Cartoon Network USA on 17th March 1997, starting off with an episode from the 1985 animated series – Thundercats, as time went on, Toonami aired hit imports from Japan such as Dragon Ball Z, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gundam Wing and U.S. animation such as Justice League Unlimited from Warner Bros. Animation. Toonami also expanded to Cartoon Network’s international feeds, including the UK and Australia. The block ended in 2008, but was revived four years later in 2012 as part of Cartoon Network’s adult nighttime programming block – Adult Swim, since then, Toonami also had an international revival with channel launches in Asia and France. Faithful action-animation and anime fans have kept Toonami popular despite its late-night timeslot, with many of its new episode premieres trending on Twitter on Saturday nights.

Toonami has recently extended its broadcast period by half hour, starting at the earlier time of 11pm ET/PT on Saturday nights, the block has also welcomed back new episodes of Samurai Jack, a show which also aired on Toonami while the block was airing on Cartoon Network. New episodes of Samurai Jack are produced by Cartoon Network Studios and Williams Street (Adult Swim’s production house). Toonami has also been airing the latest installment of the Dragon Ball franchise – Dragon Ball Super.

On Saturday 18th March at midnight, Toonami will premiere Mamoru Oshii’s (creator of the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi anime series – Ghost in the Shell) new five-episode micro-series, “Sand Whale and Me”. A new 5-minute episode from the micro-series will air every week for the next five consecutive weeks. Toonami fans also voted for their favourite Toonami logo throughout the history of the block, the winning logo will be used on-air for the special 20th-anniversary broadcast. Throughout the 20th anniversary broadcast, viewers will have a chance to win T-shirts, T.O.M action figures, a limited run, printed comic from Intruder 3, and much more.

Adult Swim’s dedicated weekend block, Toonami, celebrates 20 years with live streams, never-before-seen animated shorts and giveaways. The weekend celebration will kick-off Friday, March 17 with a Toonami Pre-Flight live-stream on Toonami.com/PreFlight and will feature Jason DeMarco and Gill Austin, the iconic voices of T.O.M and SARA, and classic footage from the past and an interview with co-creator Sean Akins.

Toonami first appeared on Cartoon Network’s afternoon programming block on March 17, 1997 and returned as a Saturday-night block on Adult Swim in 2012. Part lifestyle brand, part programming block, Toonami helped usher in the wave of anime in the late 90s. Toonami has recently welcomed back new episodes of Samurai Jack, and has extended its broadcast a half-hour earlier to 11 p.m. ET/PT.

“It’s hard to believe Toonami is celebrating its 20 year anniversary. Viewers across the country are invited to join the festivities with a special, live edition of Toonami Pre-Flight starting at 8 pm. ET on Friday. Steve Blum, voice of T.O.M will be live in the studio to help celebrate and answer fan questions along with DeMarco and Austin. Blum’s otherworldly counterpart, Dana Swanson (SARA), will also present an exclusive reflections piece. There will be favourite Toonami memories, throwbacks and more.

The celebration will continue into the March 18 broadcast of Toonami, with the help of Arby’s®. Fans of the block voted on their favorite graphics look of Toonami throughout the years and starting that Saturday, The premiere of legendary director Mamoru Oshii’s (Ghost in the Shell) five-episode micro-series, “Sand Whale and Me,” is also scheduled for Midnight. Each 5-minute episode will run throughout the next five consecutive weeks. For on-air eyes only, fans will have the limited chance to participate in an anniversary-themed giveaway to win T-shirts, T.O.M action figures, a limited run, printed comic from Intruder 3, and more. Today (01/03/2017), Turner USA has announced that Valerie Meraz has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Content Acquisitions & Strategy. In her new role, she will negotiate broadcasting rights deals with third-party movie, animation and live-action television studios and distributors (also includes Turner’s sister company – Warner Bros.) for Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Adult Swim (as well as TBS, TNT, truTV, TCM and the classic movie streaming service, FilmStruck).

Valerie Meraz will be based at Turner’s worldwide headquarters in Atlanta and will report to Michael Quigley, Executive Vice President of Commercial Operations, Content Strategy & Monetization for Turner’s TBS & TNT.

Meraz joined Turner in 2012 as Vice President of Program Acquisitions and played an important role in acquiring the broadcasting rights to movie blockbusters such as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and all of the upcoming DC Comics films; The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Dr. Strange and other recent hits from Marvel; and the entire Hunger Games and Divergent franchises. In summer 2016, she helped to acquire the exclusive basic cable broadcasting rights for the entire Star Wars franchise, from the six classic films to the newest films in the franchise. For Adult Swim, she negotiated long-term deals for Fox Television’s Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers for Adult Swim.

Valerie Meraz has been promoted to senior vice president of content acquisitions & strategy for Turner’s entertainment networks. In this capacity, she negotiates deals for movies and off-network television series on behalf of TBS, TNT, truTV, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Boomerang, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and FilmStruck. The content she and her team acquire help support original programming for all of those brands, including the programming and brand evolutions at TNT & TBS. Meraz is based in Atlanta and reports to Michael Quigley, executive vice president of commercial operations, content strategy & monetization for Turner’s TBS & TNT.

“Over the past five years, Valerie has built a highly effective acquisitions team that has been aggressively filling Turner’s library with valuable content and representing the company in an extremely dynamic and rapidly changing marketplace,” said Quigley. “We’re very fortunate to have someone with her experience and leadership in our corner.”

Meraz joined Turner after serving as vice president of content acquisitions for Showtime Networks, Inc., where she oversaw the evaluation and acquisition of content for Showtime, The Movie Channel, and Flix (including on-demand and digital platforms). While at Showtime, Meraz negotiated deals for the acquisition of feature films, documentaries, short films, acquired series and stand-up comedy specials.

Prior to joining Showtime, Meraz worked in feature film development for Disney’s Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group. She began her career at 20th Century Fox in the exhibitor services group as a sales trainee and was soon promoted to a position in international theatrical promotions, where she helped develop media and retail promotions for such films as Titanic, The Full Monty and William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet.

A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Meraz holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from the University of California, Los Angeles and a master’s degree in motion picture producing from the Peter Stark Producing Program at the University of Southern California. She recently won a Luminary Award from the National Association of Multi-Ethnicities in Communications (NAMIC) and the Power BrokHer Award from Women in Film and Television of Atlanta.

Today (23/02/2017) Adult Swim UK announced on Facebook and Twitter that Samurai Jack Season 5 will premiere on Adult Swim on FOX UK on Thursday 16th March at midnight (technically 12am Friday 17th March). Unlike previous seasons, the new season will be airing on FOX UK’s Adult Swim programming block instead of Cartoon Network as the new season will have a much more violent and darker tone. The decision to air the show on Adult Swim instead of Cartoon Network may of also been the fact that kids who watched the show’s earlier seasons are now in Adult Swim’s target audience. The UK premiere of the new Samurai Jack season will only be six days after the U.S. premiere on Adult Swim USA on Saturday 11th March at 11pm ET/PT.

In Samurai Jack season 5, Aku has destroyed every time portal. Jack suffered through hell for fifty years; roaming the land and hoping to go back home. Now, Jack must to fight for his right to go back to his own time. Season 5 will be action-packed conclusion every Samurai Jack fan has been waiting for and the final season will consist of 10 episodes. The show was created by Genndy Tartakovsky (also known for creating Cartoon Network’s Dexter’s Laboratory and for directing Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania).

Ahead of the premiere in the U.S. and UK next month, Adult Swim USA has uploaded a sneak peek clip from the new season onto their YouTube channel. In the sneak peek, Jack (in full armour) rides a spiked motorcycle into a battle against beetle-like robots.
