Turner India has announced that Cartoon Network India’s sister channel – Toonami will cease broadcasting on Tuesday 15th May. At launch, the channel mostly focused on action animation with shows such as Batman, Superman, Transformers: Robots in Disguise, Justice League, Inazuma Eleven Go and Dragon Ball Z, but in 2017, the channel was re-purposed as an classic animation channel, mostly airing shows from Cartoon Network’s and Hanna-Barbera’s library, however, the channel still airs the action-anime series Dragon Ball Super.

Turner India just soft-launched launched a new version of Cartoon Network called Cartoon Network HD+ last Sunday (15th April) which is being rolled out on other operators, it’s likely that the new channel will be Toonami India’s eventual replacement. The other Toonami channel in the Asia-Pacific region – Toonami Asia just recently closed at the end of March.

Toonami fansite – ToonamiFaithful.com has announced some sad news via a statement from Turner Asia-Pacific, the Toonami Asia television channel, along with its on-demand services will be closing at the end of this month.

Toonami Asia mostly airs child-friendly western action animation from both Warner Bros. Animation’s and Cartoon Network’s animation libraries, this includes shows such as Justice League Action, Teen Titans, Ben 10 and Generator Rex, acquired programming such as Transformers: Robots in Disguise and Xiaolin Chronicles and also the occasional Japanese anime such as Dragonball Super. This contrasts with the U.S. version which mostly focuses on mature audiences and predominately airs anime. Since the launch of Toonami Asia in 2012, Turner expanded the Toonami channel brand to other parts of the world including India, France and Africa.

The statement from Turner Asia-Pacific said:

“The Toonami Channel and its on-demand services in Southeast Asia will cease transmission at the end of March. Thank you to all our fans for watching and all of your amazing support. Check out Cartoon Network and Boomerang for more great kids entertainment.”

The good news is that Turner can now focus more on its core kids’ brands – Cartoon Network and Boomerang and offer animated shows that are more appealing to Asia-Pacific audiences.
