“Ben 10 is one of the most successful boy’s properties of all time and bringing it to life through our Alien Party Tour is a great way for fans to get stuck in and experience it for themselves. We know that activities like this, which engage fans of the show in a fun and meaningful way, result not only in a uplift in retail footfall and consumer product sales, but also a feel-good factor that provides fans with a deeper, long-term connection to our brand.”

Smyths Toys was also one of the three national retailers (along with Tesco and Toys R Us) that helped organise Cartoon Network’s Ben 10 Truck Tour last July, where a specially custom-made trailer based on The Rustbucket RV motorhome visited several locations across the UK to help promote the then newly launched Ben 10 toy range which included a toy based on Ben Tennyson’s Omnitrix and roleplay items and action figures based on the aliens of the Omnitrix.

Special Report We Bare Bears Bearista Coffee Mobile UK Tour Birmingham 14th January

For two weekends (Saturday 13th January and Sunday 14th January; Saturday 20th January and Sunday 21st January), the three bears from Cartoon Network’s We Bare Bears – Grizzly (Grizz), Panda (Pan Pan) and Ice Bear are touring around the UK in their Ice Bear designed coffee van stopping at four major cities – London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester. The tour started yesterday at London’s Southbank, today, the three bears visited Birmingham (or “Bearingham”). As Birmingham city centre is only thirty minutes away by train from where I live and I’ve got nothing else better to do on a Sunday, I thought I might as well have a look.

The coffee van was located at Victoria Square, just outside of the Council House and next to the “Floozie in the Jacuzzi” statue, so it was easy to find. When I got there, I discovered that the coffee van was designed exactly like Ice Bear from the show, complete with fur and his face at the front and a pergola sheltering the statues of the three bears. There were two “bearistas” (a pun on bear and barista, someone who serves hot drinks) serving free We Bare Bears themed coffee drinks with humorous names, I asked for a “Pandacino”, which was a cappuccino with Panda’s face sprinkled on with chocolate powder, the baristas used stencils for the different characters forming the desired design on top of the drink.

The coffee cup also featured Pan Pan’s face on it, Ice Bear and Grizz cups were also available. Other drinks also included the “Bearpresso” (espresso), “Mocha Bear” and “Ice Bear Needs Latte”, there were two more child (or “baby bear”) friendly drinks including the “Grizzlychoc” (hot chocolate) and the “Babybearcino” (a cup of hot milk with or without chocolate sprinkles). Masks with the bears’ faces were also given out to the kids.

In the actual animated series, Ice Bear is a talented barista and in the episode “Coffee Cave”, the bears open up a coffee shop in their own home. However, in an ironic and humorous twist, it turns out that Ice Bear himself can’t cope with caffeine and turns psychotic when he has too much coffee.

After I was served a drink, there was an opportunity to take a selfie with the bears, Grizz’s hand was holding a selfie stick, which had a tablet attached to it. I’m currently waiting for my photo which will be sent by e-mail, but as soon as I receive it I’ll include it in the blog post. The public event was well executed, creative and adorable and the people running the event were very friendly, it was a good publicity event to help promote the animated series and to advertise the new episodes now airing on Cartoon Network UK.

The next stop on the Bears’ tour is Buchanan Street in Glasgow, Scotland next Saturday (20th January) and finally the intu Trafford Centre in Greater Manchester next Sunday (21st January).
