Warner Bros. Animation Announces New Looney Tunes Shortform Episodes

During the Annecy Animation Festival this week, Warner Bros. Animation has announced that it will produce new Looney Tunes shortform content called “Looney Tunes Cartoons” which will feature classic cartoons icons such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety and more. Each cartoon episode will vary from one to six minutes in length, each featuring the animator’s personality and style, fifty episodes are currently in production. The new Looney Tunes cartoons will be available on multiple platforms and formats including digital, mobile and television and each season will have a total of 1,000 minutes of content which is expected to be released in 2019.

Warner Bros. Animation will emulate the high production value and process of the original Looney Tunes theatrical shorts, with episode storytelling driven by each cartoonist. At Annecy Animation Festival’s MIFA (French: Marché international du film d’animation, English: International Animation Film Market), Warner Bros. Animation has showcased a sneak peek of the new content with an animated short called “The Curse of the Monkey Bird”, the animated short had a strongly positive response at the festival. The animated short was shown as part of Warner Animation Group’s and Warner Bros. Animation’s Look Ahead event which was held in Annecy yesterday (11/06/2018), which also included sneak peeks of Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, Smallfoot and also The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.

The new Looney Tunes cartoons will feature experienced Looney Tunes voice cast members including Eric Bauza (voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Tweety in the new shorts), Jeff Bergman and Bob Bergen. Sam Register (Teen Titans Go! executive producer and creator of Cartoon Network’s HiHi Puffy AmiYumi) and Peter Browngardt (Creator of Uncle Grandpa and Secret Mountain Fort Awesome) serve as executive producers.

Sam Register, the president of Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series, said: “Looney Tunes Cartoons places these characters into the hands of some of the best artists in the business and into an animated shorts format that will remind many of the time when they first fell in love with Bugs, Daffy, Porky and the rest of the gang.”

According to Peter Browngardt, he wanted to go back to the late 1930s, early 1940’s Looney Tunes art style, which he refers to as “super irreverent, super bananas and high energy”.

In other Annecy related news, Cartoon Network will host its popular Picnic By the Lake event on Thursday 14th June (12.30pm to 2.30pm), the event will be held in partnership with Warner Bros. Animation to help promote the cinema release of Teen Titans Go! To The Movies.

From The Warner Bros. Animation Press Release: Warner Bros. Animation Launches New Short-Form Content Program Looney Tunes Cartoons

Warner Bros. Animation is announcing its most ambitious Looney Tunes content initiative to date with Looney Tunes Cartoons, a series of new short form cartoons starring the iconic and beloved Looney Tunes characters. With multiple artists employing a visual style that will resonate with fans, each “season” will produce 1,000 minutes of all-new Looney Tunes animation that will be distributed across multiple platforms – including digital, mobile and broadcast.

Looney Tunes Cartoons echoes the high production value and process of the original Looney Tunes theatrical shorts with a cartoonist-driven approach to storytelling. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and other marquee Looney Tunes characters will be featured in their classic pairings in simple, gag-driven and visually vibrant stories. Each cartoon will vary from one to six minutes in length and, from the premise on through to the jokes, will be “written” and drawn by the cartoonists allowing their own personality and style to come through in each cartoon.

“The Looney Tunes are one of the most beloved group of animated characters in the world” said Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series. “Looney Tunes Cartoons places these characters into the hands of some of the best artists in the business and into an animated shorts format that will remind many of the time when they first fell in love with Bugs, Daffy, Porky and the rest of the gang.”

Looney Tunes Cartoons is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and features veteran Looney Tunes voice cast members including Eric Bauza, Jeff Bergman and Bob Bergen. Sam Register (Teen Titans Go!) and Peter Browngardt (Uncle Grandpa) serve as executive producers.

At the event, fans will be able to buy Cartoon Network merchandise, the proceeds will be donated to the charity – Save The Children, an international organisation that promotes children’s rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries, which is an appropriate choice of charity because children are Cartoon Network’s core audience.

By purchasing products featuring Cartoon Network’s popular shows such as The Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, Adventure Time, Uncle Grandpa, We Bare Bears, The Amazing World of Gumball, Steven Universe and Clarence – fans will be supporting Save the Children Italy’s “Illuminiamo il Futuro” (Let’s Illuminate The Future) campaign aimed at combating poverty and offering free educational and training opportunities to children and teenagers who live in conditions of socio-economic hardship in deprived parts of Italy.

The temporary shop will offer exclusive products, limited editions and special collections created in collaboration with brands and artists such as: Sio, an Italian cartoonist and web star, who has created an exclusive capsule collection with illustrations influenced by Steven Universe, Adventure Time and Clarence; Radio Deejay with co-branded merchandising; and the street artists, Mr. Wany, Pao, Laurina Paperina, Mr.Klevra, omino71 and pixel artist The Oluk, who will create artwork inspired by Cartoon Network’s shows which will only be available exclusively at Cartoon Network’s Pop Up Town.

There will be Adult Swim products for older fans, especially for shows such as Rick and Morty. During the course of the event, Piazza Gae Aulenti will host a range of free events, art exhibitions and public meet and greets with celebrities from the world of entertainment, music, street artists, DJs and YouTubers.

Every day and during the event’s opening hours of 10am to 8pm, nail artists will be offering Powerpuff Girls nail art. Also at the event is the Ben 10 Hero Experience, an interactive augmentated reality game which allows fans to use the power of the Omnitrix and transform themselves into various aliens. Also there will be a Powerpuff Yourself print shop, where you can create your own Powerpuff Girls character and print it on a T-shirt. At the event, there will be the opportunity to take photos with the stars of Cartoon Network including The Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, Gumball and Finn and Jake from Adventure Time.

* The channel originally launched as a combined Italian, French and Spanish service in June 1998 before being fully localised, with France and Spain spinning off and having their own version of Cartoon Network as well, before then and from January 1996, Italian was available as a soundtrack on the pan-European version of Cartoon Network, a 24-hour service became available in October 1997.
