Warner Animation Group To Produce Tom And Jerry Live-Action Animation Hybrid Movie

According to an exclusive from movie industry magazine – Variety, Warner Bros’ animated movie division – WAG (Warner Animation Group), the same studio behind The Lego Movie are in negotiations with Tim Story (director of Shaft and Fantastic Four) to direct a new Tom and Jerry live-action/animated hybrid movie. WAG has also hired Chris Columbus as creative director on the new Scooby-Doo! animated movie which is planned to be released in 2020.

Since The Lego Movie, WAG has been working hard developing movie ideas from classic Hanna-Barbera properties, Warner Bros. as a whole wants to give these classic cartoon characters as much attention as their other popular properties such as DC (Batman, Superman etc.) or Harry Potter.

Warner Bros. wants to produce a mixture of animated features and live-action hybrids, with coordinating live-action and animation teams working together and there still be emphasis on animation for live-action/animation hybrid projects. The new Tom and Jerry movie is expected to start filming in 2019.

The movie will have real world footage with animated versions of the famous cat and mouse duo, according to sources obtained by Variety, the film will be very similar to the original Tom and Jerry shorts and its various reboots and offshoots, as it will depend on physical slapstick comedy and the two characters will not speak, this will help the movie appeal more to international audiences.

The other major live-action hybrid movie expected to go into production next year is the sequel to Space Jam – Space Jam 2 with NBA superstar LeBron James who just like Michael Jordan in the original movie, will team up with the Looney Tunes to play basketball. The studio is also making a “Wile E. Coyote vs. ACME” live-action/animated hybrid movie, with The Lego Movie’s Chris McKay leading development. WAG is also working on a movie based on “The Jetsons” with Matt Lieberman and the director of Sausage Party – Conrad Vernon, WAG is also developing movies based on The Flintstones and Wacky Races. WAG’s next major movie – The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part will be released in cinemas across the U.S. on 8th February 2019.
