Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi Pilot Episode Now On Vimeo
The pilot episode of Cartoon Network’s 2004 animated series – Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi has been uploaded onto the Vimeo video sharing website. Thanks to the Vimeo user – Lincar Rox and to show director and co-founder of Renegade Animation – Darrell van Citters, the pilot episode is now online for everyone to see. Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi follows the adventures of two female Japanese pop stars with completely different personalities: Yumi Yoshimura, a punk rocker and Ami Onuki, a cheerful girly-girl. Both characters are based off the real Japanese pop band Puffy AmiYumi.
The pilot episode is about seven minutes long and follows Ami and Yumi on their first ever trip to the United States, at first, they find America to be a strange place and have a few mishaps during their holiday, but then, they soon realised they’ve actually enjoyed their time in America. The pilot is an early concept of the show, the character and background designs have changed, and the band manager in the show – Kaz is absent from the pilot. The show’s creator – Sam Register is now the president of Warner Bros. Animation.
The pilot’s rough and clean-up animation was hand-drawn, scanned and then vectorised in Adobe Streamline and then coloured and compositioned in Flash, but when the show was greenlit, the production crew at Renegade Animation used Flash for the entire animation process.
