Steven Universe Panel At New York Comic Con 2017

Today (05/10/2017) on the opening day of New York Comic Con 2017 (05/10/2017 – 08/10/2017), there was a panel for Cartoon Network’s cult animated show – Steven Universe, the special event took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. The special event was filled with musical moments, sneak peeks and an opportunity for fans to ask the panel questions. The show’s creator – Rebecca Sugar was there, along with mystery guests Zach Callison (Voice of Steven Universe), Michaela Dietz (Voice of Amethyst), Deedee Magno Hall (Voice of Pearl), Grace Rolek (voice of Connie) and Tom Scharpling (voice of Greg Universe). The panel was moderated by journalist – Eric Thurm.

During the panel many songs from the show were performed in front of fans including “Don’t Cost Nothing” from the 2017 Creative Arts Emmy nominated episode – Mr. Greg, “It’s Over” also from the same episode and a brand new song “Escapism” performed by Rebecca Sugar. Also during the panel, a sneak peek of an upcoming episode – “Dewey Wins” was shown.

People who asked questions were given a “I am Made Of Love” T-shirt, a reference to a lyric from the song – “Stronger Than You”, also referring to Ruby and Sapphire – the two fused gems that formed together to form Garnet.

Also on this Saturday (07/10/2017) at New York Comic Con, there will be a combined OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, Ben 10 and Teen Titans Go! panel called “Cartoon Network Presents: Let’s Be Heroes!”, attending the panel will be Ian Jones-Quartey (Creator of OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes! and voice of Rad), Ashly Burch (voice of Enid from OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes), John Fang (Executive Producer of Ben 10), Greg Cipes (voice of Stinkfly from Ben 10 and Beast Boy from Teen Titans Go!), Peter Michail (Director of Teen Titans Go!) and Tara Strong (voice of Raven from Teen Titans Go! and Ben Tennyson from Ben 10).

As previously mentioned on the blog, Cartoon Network USA has started hosting a brand new weekly Steven Universe podcast, featuring the cast and crew from the show. The podcast is a behind the scenes inside the development of the recently Emmy-nominated show. Steven Universe fans listening to the podcast will find out more about the creative process behind the show as well as the show’s origins. The new podcast is another media offering relating to Steven Universe from Cartoon Network alongside the Steven Universe Soundtrack: Volume 1 digital album, the new upcoming console game – Save The Light and the Steven Universe: Art and Origins art book.

In the most recent episode of the podcast called “Coming of Age with Steven Universe”, Zach Callison, voice of Steven Universe, and Grace Rolek, the voice of Steven’s best friend – Connie, talk about growing up and their time growing into their roles. Both talk about when they auditioned for their voice acting roles and the moment when they were hired for the part. Both Zach and Grace talk about working with Rebecca Sugar and the Crewniverse and also their favourite episode moments and songs.

Yesterday (21/07/2017) was the first official day of San Diego Comic Con 2017, so here’s a little overview on what happened, yesterday was also Warner Bros. Animation’s main day for animation programming for Cartoon Network. The day started off with a Teen Titans Go! panel, at the panel, the co-creator of DC’s Young Justice – Greg Weisman was asked a question whether the cancellation of the show was because of Teen Titans Go!, he revealed that Teen Titans Go! was in development before Young Justice was even cancelled. Also a new season of Young Justice – Young Justice: Outsiders is currently in development.

Teen Titans Go! fans attending panel were giving a Teen Titans Go! goodie bag, featuring art of the Teen Titans from the original animated series beating up the Teen Titans from the Teen Titans Go! universe.

Greg Cipes (Beast Boy), Tara Strong (Raven) and Scott Menville (Robin) were meeting and greeting fans during the Teen Titans Go! autograph session.

The next panel was for Unikitty, Warner Bros. Animation’s upcoming animated series based on the character of the same name from the 2014 movie – The Lego Movie. People who attended the session got to see the first episode before anyone else.

Lynn V. Wang (producer), Andrea Fernandez (art director), Eric Bauza (voice actor) and Ed Skudder (showrunner), all took part in a Unikitty poster signing session.

The next Warner Bros. Animation panel was for Justice League Action, Cartoon Network’s latest superhero animated show featuring a large bunch of characters from the DC Comics universe.

Afterwards, Rachel Kimsey (voice of Wonder Woman) and Jason Lewis (voice of Superman) and Diedrich Bader (Booster Gold) were also meeting fans at the autograph session.

There was also a panel for the upcoming Lego Ninjago Movie, Lego Senior Creative Director – Simon Lucas was at the panel, later he appeared in the photo shoot with the movie’s cast with some specially created Lego Mini-figures based on all the characters. Convention visitors even took part in a session of Ninjoga (Ninja + Yoga).

TBS also had their animation session at the convention yesterday evening, and J.G. Quintel, the creator of Cartoon Network’s Regular Show revealed a sneak preview of his new show – Close Enough which will premiere in 2018. The show is currently in development at Cartoon Network Studios.

To really prove that Cartoon Network are in town, giant inflatable balloons featuring the faces of the channel’s most famous characters are on display outside the New Children’s Museum in the city.

As yesterday was the first official day of San Diego Comic Con 2017, visitors got to see the OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes themed Cartoon Network booth for the first time, make sure to visit the booth to get some Cartoon Network freebies.

To end the day, there was a Summertime Go! Screening and Costume Contest, this was an opportunity for convention attendees to dress up as their favourite characters and watch some exclusive sneak peeks. Guest judges include Ian Jones-Quartey (creator and voice of Rad for OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes), Greg Cipes (voice of Stinkfly for Ben 10 and voice of Beast Boy for Teen Titans Go!), Zach Callison (voice of Steven for Steven Universe), Deedee Magno-Hall (voice of Pearl for Steven Universe), and Michaela Dietz (voice of Amethyst for Steven Universe) and the voice actor of multiple roles in several shows – Eric Bauza.
